Revisiting Cam's 4 Sacks Sunday

*FreeFua*

First sack was on Cam, but I don't think anyone here will judge him for it since he was coming off an injury and he was rusty.

The other 3 there was nothing. he did the right thing taking the sack in those three plays.

He could try throwing the ball away, but that could be dangerous, too.

I think Cam is confidant enough in his ability, and the ability of those around him, that 2nd and 16 is not as big a deal as a turnover.

Out of the 4 sacks, 3 of them could be avoided.

There is no reason, with the cannon of an arm that Cam has, that he could not launch it 5 yds over a receivers head near the sideline out of bounds.

2nd and 10 is always better than 2nd and 19.

He can expect D's to try to corral him and leave him no outlet.  He needs to get a feel of when it is time and throw the ball away.  His normal MO has been to run when that time came, but D's are getting better at cutting him off.

It is just something to clean up that should come with age.

But if you take a look at what Cam's looking at, you can see a lot of it isn't his fault.

Maybe I'm over doing it with these next two but I remember how much people blew up during the playoff game when Cam took back to back sacks in the third Quarter. So I'll just post the pics and you can be the judge

I'm not criticizing Cam, just pointing out an area where he can improve, but a part of what makes QBs like Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Manning so special is that they can recognize coverage like this in a split second and throw the ball away without grounding, to keep from losing yards and forcing a throw. Cam, I don't think, forces a lot of throws in situations, but he doesn't throw it away very effectively--obviously he, at times, scrambles very effectively. Other young QBs have similar problems in these situations. Luck will force throws, Kaepernick absolutely forces throws resulting in a lot of stupid turnovers, Griffin would make a stupid decision to scramble and take a hit on the run (resulting in possible injuries AND loss of yards in most cases), Wilson actually does a pretty good job of either scrambling or throwing it away but forces some and takes sacks, Foles absolutely refuses to throw the ball away, run or force a throw, resulting in way fewer turnovers for him but a lot of sacks that shouldn't be, screwing up their momentum in Kelly's fast pace O. This is one of the biggest things I think Cam needs to work on is recognizing these situations and effectively throwing the ball away before getting sacked if he isn't able to scramble or hit someone downfield. It's scary how damn good he could be if he masters this, among a few other things.

That being said, none of those sacks are his fault at all. But, he could've have been able to avoid some or most of them (I do remember one on a play action where he was sacked right when he turned around so that he obviously couldn't do anything about, but there were others that he could've avoided).

Not to be "That guy", but, how is throwing the ball away dangerous?

2nd and 16 is a big deal. Confident or not, it is not a scenario/situation you want to put yourself into.

One thing I notice about a lot of these photos is Cam never has an outlet if the plays break down.  Usually three receivers in the routes and everyone else is blocking.  Guys like Rodgers, Manning, and Brees are so good bc they have someone to check down to, Cam doesn't seem to in any of these photos.

Not sure if that is just play design and a coincidence OR its because there isn't a lot of faith in the offensive line to hold blocks so they keep running backs in to help out.

It could also be that they have a lot of faith in Cam's ability to elude pressure and make something happen.  If he could have escaped in either situation there is a ton of grass in front of him.

I think you hit the nail on the head here.  We don't use our passing game like a running game, which is what a lot of those other teams do.  When we pass on first or second down, we're not looking for a 3-5 yard gain.  In our standard pass plays (not screens and such), all the routes seem to be 10 yards or longer.  I think they keep the backs in there because they'd rather increase the odds of Cam hitting an open receiver on a medium range route than give him a fallback option to gain 3 yards.  And the reason for that is because, more often than not, Cam will try to do something himself when the protection breaks down.  It's in his DNA.  Why fight it when you could embrace it and build the offense around it?

That first sack he took was the most frustrating for me. To me the only guy he had open was the guy in the middle of the field but he had some massive DTs ready to swat the ball down. He had tons of time in the pocket which was nullified by the coverage and long developing routes. So Greg Olsen is his dump off near the line of scrimmage on Cam's right side and instead of trying to get open, Greg blocks his coverage. I think Greg saw something, If Cam had cut in his direction there were yards to be had. But Cam goes left and the defensive line catches him. The loss was minimal, I was mostly mad at him for taking a big hit because the play wasn't going well to begin with. With the incredible power of hindsight I would have thrown it at Greg's feet when the play broke down but I understand Cam wanted to test the wheels and all of this happened in about a second.

The only thing I will say about that free runner sack, Cam lost several extra yards trying to evade the sack. He does this and it's particularly painful when it knocks us out of field goal range as it did in January. I feel like his scrambles need to be in a forward direction as much as possible.

But overall I was very impressed compared to his preseason. In the second half you did see him throw out of pressure instead of run and It worked.

Where is the outlet / hot read in Shula's offense for these types of situations.

Where are the shorter routes, the slant, the bubble screens, delays, draws,  shuttle passes,  anything to help.

He knows we have a dumpster fire for a OLINE.

Very frustrating.  Lack of creativty, very very very frustrating.

Here Cam, its 3rd and fill in the blank, make something happen.

The first play was just bad timing if he makes the throw before the receivers make their cut he has ample time and separation to make that throw even with pressure. As for the others those routes seem to take far to long to develop the receivers dont act like they will make a break till they cover a 15 yd span of grass which seems to long. Shula seems to struggle on first down play calling as well as second. Thought his forte seems to be third and 4th. Just wish he wouldnt wait till a third and long to dial up a good play. I just think this offense would benefit greatly with more short to intermediate routes early to set up the run. Instead of trying for a bomb on down one or a run up the middle. Who knows though, im not cam or shula!

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
