State of the Uglys

out of curiousity, what has DG done for you gather that a constantly changing OL is exactly what he doesn't want?  I mean, obviously you want the line to be successful enough to where you don't HAVE to make changes but so far the line play has been adequate in pass blocking and inadequate in run blocking.   Cam's mobility helps the pass blocking (once the line is comfortable with him) but what is going to make them better run blockers?

And fwiw, it's TE's and RB's and FB's as well that are falling down in the run blocking scheme.

Change can be good or change can be bad.  I'm just happy DG is the one in charge of said changes and is working well with the coaching staff with both the tools we have and the tools we want.

Gettleman himself said it in an interview.

I've looked, but I can't find a link to it, though.

Nate Chandler has to be replaced at some point with a more competent option at the position. I love his story, but his lack of experience isn't something that we can get away with for incredibly long. Our inability to run the ball up the middle, while not hurting us the past two weeks, is going to become an issue against better teams. The fact that we're not getting push in the redzone on running plays is an IMMENSE concern to me and the fact that we've had some missed blocks that have contributed to our RB crew getting banged up is not a good sign. Pass protecting has been suitable but not ideal. I understand that Cam is harder to block for than most QB because of his desire to extend plays but I wasn't comfortable with the amount of times he ended up on his back last week. It seemed like there were very few blitz plays by the Lions that were unsuccessful in the sense of getting pressure on Cam. To his credit, he did a decent enough job of getting the ball out and making positive yards on a few of those plays but it's still a concern.

On the upswing, there have been less holding and presnap penalties than I expected with a new group working together. I think this group is pretty tight, but they're about maxed out in terms of everyone bringing what they can. I only think we have two NFL caliber starters on our line right now and the rest of the group is patchwork but competitive. If they can keep that going they have a chance to help this work. But we have to be able to run the ball and right now we're not getting it done.

Dave Gettleman's expressed approach to the offensive line is that he wants to put together a young group of guys, have them gel together into an effective unit and keep that unit going for several years.  It's a good plan, one that helped the Giants win a couple of Super Bowls.

Remember the slow starts in NY, even the super bowl years.  I think Eli plays as well as the OL plays--he is showing that now.  Here is the point--

Our OL has not been good in the run blocking dept.  That is something easier to fix than  pass blocking. So, when we get the run blocking right--we should be fine.

It is obvious that the OL has room to develop and grow.  3 players new to their positions with one coming off a season on IR.  We should get better (as you discussed) at 2-0 now, we will only get better-we have not yet reached the "Murderer's row" portion of our schedule.  Will the line develop fast enough?

You also point out the 3-4.  I think we should run better vs the 3-4 the steelers will throw at us, but I see our Tackles getting confused more.

I anticipate us signing Bell to a very team friendly long-term deal. Whether to be our starter at LT, RT or a backup is yet to be seen for sure, but we're gonna get his play for mere peanuts. And I know everyone here hates him, but he is solid enough to get the job done. He's not a first team All Pro but he'll do his job for the most part. Even first team All Pro's have slip-ups that result in sacks, and Bell hasn't had any, from what I've seen, this year.

Traditional strategy vs a 3-4 blitzing attack is to run on it and use screens and misdirection in the pass game.

I'm feeling that both guard positions are set, as long as Amini holds up this year. If Bell proves the doubters wrong this season, bring in a young tackle to take over for chandler for a year. groom him to be the LT long term. Chandler would be good depth. I think Chandler is more of a LT than a RT, anyway.

Something to keep in mind. Kalil isn't getting any younger, and his cap number is getting up there. I don't see a move being made anytime soon, honestly; although, stranger things have happened. He's still elite for sure. If there's a tempting center sitting in the 2nd round next draft, I wouldn't be surprised if DG bites. Especially if Amini doesn't last the year. Insert him at LG until Kalil's play drops.
