Goodell needs to be fired

I actually have no problem with the "one man jury" approach for an NFL commissioner.

But if you're going to go that route, your reputation had absolutely better be impeccable.  You have to be completely above reproach or no one will take you seriously in that role.

Can Goodell still claim this?

I'll be shocked if Goodell is canned. Even though players, fans, and the media hate him. He's beloved by the only people that matter. That would be the owners. He's put more money in their pocket than ever before. Like another poster said, we can trick ourselves and think that Goodell, like the president, runs this joint, but it's really ran by the owners.

Can we stop pretending to be outraged or ignorant that a multi-billion dollar company would crawl through a river of filth to protect its interests?  The league hid the information and was arrogant in its assessment that it wouldn't be that big of a deal.  The NFL must really be getting too powerful.  The government had to show them who still runs the show.  The NFL will step back in line, the heat will die down and everyone will forget that this was even an issue.

There's an additional element for me.

A fair number of former players, and even some current players, have gone on record ripping Goodell over this.  The general statement is something like "oh yeah, you told me 'no excuses' when I was in trouble, but now look at you" or some such.

How can he be taken seriously as the arbiter of discipline after all this?

And although it's farther off, I think if you're the NFL you have to ponder what it'll be like the next time a new CBA deal is up.  Do you want to go into those negotiations with a weakened commissioner?

I don't think he can be saved.  And if you do keep him, at what cost to your product?

This is one of my favorites.....

...and maybe the players that are beating their wives and children?

Of course they are to blame for their actions. That goes without saying.

But the current poo storm is a direct result of how the commissioner has handled things. That is the difference between this case and the dozens of other cases over the last 10 to 20 years. First he goes ridiculously light on Rice, then goes hard on him when the video comes out, then erroneously says no one in the league office has seen the video, then appoints a special investigator, etc. etc. etc.

He's been all over the map for the last 6 months, and there is still no clear idea going forward what they will do differently. Frankly at this point, it appears sponsors like Raddison are forcing the league to do what they should have done without outside pressure. That is a clear lack of leadership.

Wouldnt that mean in the situation you seem to want, the NFL would have decided weeks ago to suspend Hardy?

He was CONVICTED. Sure, its all bullshit and yes..he is appealing...but in the land of heavyhanded "leadership" you seem to be asking for, Hardy would not have even been at camp.

He is considered not guilty.....trial de novo look it up

It's kinda like the US President. He gets all the hate and blame, but in reality he's just a public figure who has very little power.

this may turn into tinderbox material... but are you really going to suggest that the POTUS has very little power? i dont care what party you affiliate with, that statement is just uninformed...

I took you up on the suggestion, and did look it up.

From Wiki: A trial de novo is usually ordered by an appellate court when the original trial failed to make a determination in a manner dictated by law.

I'mnot privy to the actual legal proceeding Hardy had in July, but EVERY article I found says he was CONVICTED.

A conviction doesn't sound like a situation where a determination was not found, but I sure as hell am not a lawyer.

But as I have said, legal loopholes or lingo aside..the only thing the media, haters, league...etc are seeing is CONVICTED.

Players have been in trouble for years for domestic violence.  Nobody did much more than shake their head. This fiasco was created by the league attempting to be the law of the land before the law of the land had a chance to run it's course. Not having the ability or guts to be consistent is the problem and at the end of the day it rests squarely on Goodell's shoulders.
