Charlotte Independence Thread

The countdown is on for the Charlotte Independence. Not just for the USL soccer team’s debut on Friday, but for a temporary stadium at the county-owned Ramblewood Soccer Complex scheduled to open May 2.

For the first two home games, on March 27 and April 24, the Charlotte Independence will be playing at Transamerica Field on the UNC Charlotte campus. Then, on May 2, the team is scheduled to face Louisville City FC at Ram blewood. Unless and until $1.5 million of temporary seating, locker rooms and VIP areas are built at Ramblewood, the Independence would be forced back to the UNCC campus.

All of these moves are aimed at giving the Charlotte soccer team time to strike a deal with Mecklenburg County for a makeover of 79-year-old Memorial Stadium. Those discussions are ongoing, with talks calling for at least $4 million worth of improvements paid for by the team and the county park and recreation department.

Jim Garges, county park and recreation director, told me Monday he has high hopes for the Independence. He likes the team investors’ goal of eventually joining Major League Soccer and expanding Memorial Stadium again if and when that happens. The Independence is one of 13 new clubs in the USL this season, expanding the Tampa, Fla.-based soccer league to 24 teams.

Jim McPhilliamy, Independence president and managing partner, said Monday the team is working closely with the county to win approval for permits allowing the temporary stadium conversion to be built. Construction must begin no later than April 6 to ensure the May 2 game is played at Ramblewood, he said. Seating capacity in the temporary venue, designed by consultant Nussli, will be 4,300.

“The county is really working hard to help us get things up and running in time,” McPhilliamy said. Ramblewood could be the team’s temporary home for two seasons. Garges, the county park director, said improvements to Memorial Stadium will probably not be ready before the 2017 season.

Are they still streaming the games on YouTube for those who can't go?

Edit: I played many games when I played premier soccer at ramblewood. Good fields but what woild the seating look like and how would they fit that in the center field? Also since it wouldn't be at UNCC would they allow alcohol sales?

Charlotte, Charlotte we're the Independence.  Causing a commotion, can we get promotion?

The Independence play the Carolina Railhawks in the next round of the US Open Cup.  If we win this game we get the opportunity to play the NE Revs.  #LetsRide
