The unintended consequences of NFL bowing down to knee jerk reactionaries

If the NFL gives in to the medias relentless pressure, and suspends Hardy. They will be going against their on precedent of how they handle 1st time misdemeanors.

I have heard some of the media clamoring for any player arrested for DV or assault be suspended immediately until the case has a legal disposition.

What's to stop someone with money and motive from making sure a star player from a rival team meets up with some sort of domestic or assault issue that would guarantee the player would not be an obstacle.

Yea all a team has to do in order to guarantee a Super Bowl win is have a woman claim the other team's QB abused her. Don't need any proof. Just accusations and then bam! That QB is gone and the team that sent her wins the Super Bowl. Even if the NFL finds out later all that will be said is "oops, sorry. just gotta deal with it now.".

It's a slippery slope to be sure, the minute you start giving into media pressure and making knee-jerk decisions you're in big trouble and the NFL is in big trouble. Now Rice is appealing his indefinite suspension on the grounds that he's already been punished for the offense and he has a very good chance of winning that appeal because it sets a terrible precedence. You can't rightfully punish someone for the same offense twice and nothing changed about his case beyond the public's perception after we saw him actually knock his wife out. The 2 game suspension was ridiculously insufficient, but it was the punishment he was assessed for assaulting his wife and rendering her unconscious.

The Panthers are on the ropes now, because they buckled to the pressure and deactivated Hardy to appease the media - but the moment they decide to make him active they'll take twice as much crap as they were taking before.

The Rice deal is different, I feel. Sure, the video riled people up, but the NFL has itself to blame for lying about not having that footage to begin with. They tried to save their own ass by punishing him indefinitely after going light on the 2 game suspension. He'll win his appeal, but he SHOULD have had a season-long ban to begin with, IMO (sure, she came at him, but only after he spat on her twice, which is assault. So, that was self-defense on her part, which makes his self-defense argument pretty weak).

Big Ben touched my butthole with out my permission could the NFL please suspend him!!

But did he throw you on a futon?

Where there 30-40 guns on it?

Did you guys do key bumps in the bathroom while injecting HGH in each other's butt-cheeks?

If you did not meet all three criteria we must allow the legal process to sort it out. We will need time to gather all the facts and put together a time line of events so that we may come to a conclusion about any possible further action that the league may or may not be in a position to question whether or not an alleged violation has occurred.

That said, we will reserve the right to at any time for any reason apply arbitrary and excessive punishment to those who threaten the image of the league.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
