PFT: NFL may suspend Hardy

I think a three game suspension, with time served for the Detroit game, for conduct detrimental to the team is sufficient, with the jury trial pending. If he's convicted, he gets an additional three games. That would satisfy the new standard for domestic violence cases. If found not guilty, he's back with the team for the rest of the season. Regardless of guilt or innocence, he knowingly associated with an admitted coke user that night. Had he not, we (the team) wouldn't be in this mess. He has to take some responsibility for that.

For those of you claiming he should sue for slander, defamation of character, etc., my understanding is it's almost impossible for famous people to win cases of that type. I seem to remember reading there are different standards and thresholds for people in the public eye.

I know we have at least a couple of lawyers on here. Can one of you comment on this?

Yes the standard for winning a defamation suit is higher for celebs.

I doubt there would be a defamation case here unless Hardy can prove the NFL intended to ruin him and that they made false statements.

Slowly it seems that the witch-hunt is dying off and now it's just the media clamoring for stories. Last week it was 90/10 on suspending him, this week it's more 50/50 of letting it play out. The only ones kicking and screaming about this right now is a handful of news organizations trying to get your attention.

Bob Costas will have a self-righteous documentary on Domestic Violence, including taking shots at Greg Hardy, on Sunday Night Football when the Panthers play. His bleeding heart will spew garbage similar to his anti-gun tirade last year.

It's not going away.

Here is my question.

Let's say they suspend him until his court date.

That is 5 games suspended plus one deactivation as punishment. Then what?

If he is guilty? You give him one game? Policy is 6 games and he already has 5. Another 6? Then that is 11 games and a deactivation as punishment.....which is far more than the league policy.

If innocent? You suspended a man for 5 games and deactiviated him for one while due process played out?

It just seems there is fault no matter what happens. Nothing makes sense to do IMO

Why not suspend him for whatever the league determines appropriate for getting a guilty decision in District Court , let him appeal on the grounds that he has a scheduled jury trial soon and let his appeal extend to that event. All sides get what they want, it will just get implemented in a realistic time frame instead of the instant gratification that people seem to think they are entitled to with everything these days.

When hardy is done with this case - he won't need to play another down in the NFL : I hope he gets good lawyers and not depend on the weak NFLPA.

Don't expect the NFLPA to do anything - this is the same organization that has running backs and offensive and defensive linemen under the same contract tier as wide receivers despite a difference in the way the wear and tear on their bodies.

The same NFLPA that can't set up a bank for their players that collectively would provide loans and protection from the hounds who want their every penny and of course they end up on ESPN broke or VH1 with some shitty reality show.

The same NFLPA that will sit there and let the Espn dictate the way the NFl handles lives of hardworking young men and have then discarded like they are nothing.

This is football a very very brutal game that wreaks havoc on the body of anyone who starts playing this game when young.

For anyone to honestly make it through high school , college and the NFl - there has got to be a screw loose somewhere.

That continuous intensity is not normal and holding the same players who depend on a whistle for their stop and go is well fools play.

NFL players are in a no win situation - the media glamorizes how much they make (and forget the crazy state to state taxes) and the fact that it's a contract and most of them will only see 20% of that money. Now monetary attention will attract every skank out there and when threatened - you will get a bee line of stories of hardy like situations.

People that think Hardy is going to sue someone and win in this case are just so cute.

They can't do a thing. If they suspend him, the union will sue and win. They've to wait on the trial.

Players have been suspended for several games with no charges. They can't just sue and win just bc....

Issue is when you should punish him.

*facepalm*

You have the Vikings playing AP and the Niners with a guy who beat his wife in front of other people (aka multiple witnesses) and the NFL is going to go after the guy with the least evidence against him (aside from a biased guilty verdict that was completely based on hearsay, unreliable testimony, and conjecture). This is a joke.

they totally left out the 9ers! smh... and changed drug policies for Welker to come back... smh

What sucks about all this is that they let him play game 1, but not game 2, so now it's clear to everyone, media outlets included, that we caved to pressure and made a decision based on that outside perception.  This only sparked more confusion and questions because he played week one, and so everyone is waiting to see what Carolina will do next.

We've put the target on our own backs to an extent by our inconsistent handling of Hardy.  They should have said that they are sticking by him until he has his jury trial in November, and will take action based on the outcome.  At least then no one can argue the team's stance on the player.  If the league stepped in, then that would be the NFL making a decision or recommendation, but as a franchise, we either needed to have supported him from the beginning as all of this played out, or decided he was no longer an acceptable part of the team and just parted ways.

This fence-straddling looks worse than either of those two scenarios, in my opinion.

The suspension would be retro-active. And the NFL does not need for you to be convicted to suspend, especially your own team (for conduct detrimental to the team , which is what this is).
