Some Love For DG

Not to take anything away form DG but let's be honest,  a marmoset monkey on pcp throwing poo on the wall can run a team better than Hurney.

To be fair he did build a team that was a kickoff out of bounds away from possibly winning the Super Bowl. He drafted Julius Peppers, Jordan Gross, Chris Gamble, Thomas Davis, DeAngelo Williams, Jon Beason, Jonathon Stewart, Came Newton, and Luke Kuechly. He also drafted Ryan Kalil in the 2nd, Travelle Wharton in the 2nd, Charles Johnson in the 3rd, and Greg Hardy in the 6th. Also found a backup QB on the Saints roster who helped the team get to a Super Bowl and NFC Championship game. Did Hurney make mistakes? Absolutely, but to say he was the worst ever is far from the truth.

With that said I love what Gettleman has done. The guy knows exactly what he is doing.

Any idea when this will be. Haven't heard much about the future of our cap lately

We're never going to have $50 million to spend in free agency if that's what you're asking. First priority this off-season is signing Cam long term. Don't want him going into next season in the last year of his contract and risk losing him in 2016 free agency.

So how do we clear cap room to re-sign Cam? Go after the big contracts we have. Bye Kraken, you'll be released (well, not re-signed is more accurate). Gettleman drafting Ealy and extending Addison was the insurance for losing Hardy.

Next will be one of the RBs. It's a committee back there, so cutting one and then drafting a new one is the logical thing to do.

Charles Godfrey will prolly be hitting the road, too. His contract is too big to be a back-up at both safety and nickelback.

Don't be shocked if Gettleman drafts yet another DE so Charles Johnson can be pressured to re-do his contract or be released. Same with OLB, cuz Thomas Davis is another older guy with a big contract, too.

Changes are coming, and if you haven't won a Rookie of the Year award or been drafted by Gettleman, you're not immune.

I believe this offseason most of our options open up.

Hardy won't be back.

We will be able to cut ties with Dlo (i think we end up keeping him on the cheap).

We get Beason's dead money off the books and I believe most of Smiths.

However we are probably going to pay Cam a metric fugton of money.

Is a good place to get started.

They have us around 129m committed for next year. Bad news is that number is only for 38 players.

Once you add 15 more players, practice squad, IR, and saving some for next years rookies you are closer to 139m. League cap is 133 m but most expect it to go up again.

If it goes up to 140m we are right against it. This is with Cam making around 15m and no Hardy on the books.

Good news is whatever we can rollover from this year will add to the available space.

my favorite thing about the DG era panthers is the athletic level has gone thru the roof with guys like cam, benji, luke, hardy etc...these guys are not just good football players they're super athletes and really dictate the game based on those athletic qualities

As a couple posters have already pointed out, the monies that will be going to cam and Luke are going to be very large chunks out of the salary cap. Not sure how this team can improve much more except through the draft.

Having said that,...if our o-line is the worst it is going to be, who is to say what that ceiling is? I wouldn't be surprised if our line is the lowest paid in the league.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if all three of our WR, DB and oline are near the lowest paid in the league for each respective group.

Regardless, this team will have to consistently continue to hit big on their top draft picks to remain elite and keep the talent we already have without seeing a drop off in overall team play.

I'm now convinced that this team can truly draft BPA rather than forcing a certain player to fill a perceived need. If we continue to do this, it'll stay a next man up type of team which had few weakest links.

DG is doing great and the team is loaded with superstar-caliber players which is super-exciting for us as fans and great for the image of the organization. Don't really have much to complain about that's for sure...just wish that #76 hadn't gotten caught up in some bs. That ain't DG's fault.

Salary cap will be going up big time, almost off-setting the increasing QB salaries. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/07/cap-could-hit-160-million-in-2016/

That article was written in March. Before this whole Rice, Peterson, and Hardy thing. If public opinion stays bad and vocal, corporations will start pulling sponsorships and networks will demand the new TV deals be re-done for less. Then the salary cap will go down instead of up, since it's based on how much $$$ the league will make every year.

Imagine that nightmare for player's union. Defend those 3 and you could be risking the salaries of most of your union members. Don't defend those 3 and lose your credibility as representing your members.
