Mike Shula

I've always been a Shula critic but I have to admit, he adjusted well after the 1st two series. The uptempo was a great adjustment. The slow developing run plays with Tolbert need to go out with the trash.

Ditto, cause I feel like those plays render Tolbert useless.  The defense gets up the field and he doesn't have the immediate short burst to hit the gaps.  He needs to be on some follow the lead back off tackle boom type runs.

I didnt read this entire circle jerk thread but I know how it went.

Shula hater: Shula is horrible as an OC, he runs such a predictable offense.

Shula supporter: Well, we did score 24 points.

Hater: Yeah because Cam bailed him out

Supporter: What about the misdirection/wrinkles he threw in like the *insert unique play we run once a game*

Hater: And then he goes back to run-run-pass from a 3rd and long situation

Supporter: He's got a positive W/L record

Hater: I hate you

Supporter: I hate you

Guys, step back and look at it from this perspective. Its a team game. 11 people on offense. If one or two of the OL doesnt get their block or pull fast enough, guess what happens, the RB gets stuffed at the LOS. If they make the block, we get 4+ yards. If Cam looks to his left and doesn't see the wide open 3rd receiver because he's focused on his 1st and 2nd reads, it must be Shula's fault that Cam made a pass off his back foot into double coverage.

Shula's play calling has been outstanding given the circumstances, i.e., Cam not being in training camp, new WRs, no experience on the OL after Kalil, injured/old RBs, defensive minded HC, etc.

It will be easy to improve upon our bottom ranked offense from last year.

Ive lived in shula purgatory for a while now. I generally believe cam is best suited for a conventional, run of the mill offense because he is capable of it and has enough speed, agility and power to keep a defense on its toes.

Shula has called great games so far this season. He ran a simple and effective offense with DA.

He tried to do the same with Cam and detroit wasnt having it. The mark of a good coach is the one who changes style on the fly to exploit what the opposition was doing.

Shula really proved he can do that this week. We need him to do this at the right times. Wish him well.

Shula seems to call good plays about 70% of the time. The other 30% are horrible. The problem is there is no middle ground. Detroit couldn't stop the pass so between passes we run right up the middle straight into Suh for a loss. He kills drives each game. He WILL lose us games this year we just have to be ready for it.

But, just because a play was not successful... It does not mean it was a terrible call.

You have to pound the ball some to keep defenses honest. If you don't keep them guessing and showing that you will hit them up the gut, they can focus just in the pass and pin their ears back.

Shula called a great game...and the team executed it very well ( especially in the 2nd half).

Not exactly in this case.  It was obvious the Lions' gameplan was to shut down the run game and force Cam to beat them in the air, probably because they thought he was still hurt and also lack of respect for our receivers.  There was not going to be hardly any room running.  AND if you do run, you shoud probably mix up the run plays instead of the same "run into Suh" over and over.  The few good runs we had were different plays but we kept going back to the "run into Suh" play.

Seems like Tolbert has been coming to a stop at the line of scrimmage a lot this season and once he stops his momentum he is easy to bring down.
