I was 45 years old waiting to get my haircut and watched the entire thing unfold on live TV. I had been retired for 7 years, but I still had 3 years of recall availability left and I thought for sure I'd get the call to report for duty.

My wife's uncle was a mere few blocks away and had an 11AM meeting in Tower 1. He called his wife and told her something happened and he was getting out of the city ASAP. If you remember, cell phone service went down hard and nobody heard from him for almost 8 hours.

My father-in-law was a fire chief in NJ, right across the river. He mustered up his station at Liberty Park and they were never called upon, but spent 3 days watching everything take place.

The eeriest part was all of the vehicles left in the Park and Ride lots outside the city. All the commuters who never made it and those cars sat for weeks until the city began removing them and trying to return them to an address.

Still can't get that memory out of my head.

Was a firefighter at the time, and was about to leave for some training in Jacksonville NC.  Was having my breakfast and catching up on news when they panned there.  Another firefighter buddy of mine called and said it was an accident, I didn't think so in the slightest, just too big of a plane, and then the second one.

I knew at that moment that we were in for a very long day, and next few years.  Starting considering joining up with NYFD after all the losses starting coming out in the coming days.

I turned 22 that day. On the roof of the cigna building in Charlotte when the first plane hit. Went inside and watched the second hit. I remember the anchor saying wtc7 fell before it did. My old man called me later in the day asking if I liked aall the poo he blew up for me.

My mom was on a flight that am going from CLT to iah. She said the pilot came over the intercom and said, "the us is under attack. We are at defcom3 and must land". The landed in new Orleans and her, along with a man named Osama (poo u not) rented a car and drove to h town.

Its still a big crock of poo.
