I'd have to hear it to believe, the most I heard him say to that extend was he wanted to play one more year. Even if he said something similar that doesn't mean the passion for the game wasn't there. You cant go out there and half ass on the football field you'll get hurt bad.

He said he was going to play until he had 1000 receptions and retire as that would get him into the HOF. is that padding his stats? It sort of sounds like it. But that's up to you to judge and form your opinion.

Long time lurker, and generally i visit this board to read other fans' thoughts/reactions, but good Lord i have to get in my 2 cents here.

I've been a Smitty fan since'03 when i hopped on the Panthers bandwagon, and even had the pleasure of meeting him when he came into my store a while back. Seemed like a really cool person, furthering my fondness of him.

That being said, no way am i hoping he does well against my team. The absurdity of that thought is baffling. Against any other team, yes, but not my team!

Those in this thread hoping he destroys us need to reevaluate your loyalty.

I heard that interview also and it went like others have said. Why would we fabricate this if we hadn't heard it with our own ears. He was not a team guy anymore and made it publicly known in several interviews on wfnz just before his release.

He was saying those things during the season or before it. I can't remember if it was in the Summer or during the season.  It would make a little more sense if it was after he was hearing rumblings about his release.

I do not remember exactly the specific month but I know he had several interviews prior to the combine the put me off about his attitude toward his contract and helping the team. I heard him say specifically that he wouldn't redo his contract and all he cared about was getting his numbers. Those comments cooled me off of SS. His release wasn't long after those interviews. I'm thinking it was around a month before he was released. Anyone else that heard it care to chime in?

Dude needs to realize he still has the hearts of most of the Panthers fans and I'd be most of the current Panthers.  He needs to watch it, we didnt want this to happen to him either, but don't hurt your "after football life" with your mouth.

 

I want him back here to have his number retired and I want to see him coming back to games after he retires.  He's a legend and needs to be treated like one, but on the flip side of that, he also needs to respect the Panthers fan base a little better.

 

With that said, Gettlemen handled this situation wrong as well.
