Smitty may be even more pissed than we thought (Panthers related)

Name one wide receiver who developed into a secondary option while Steve Smith was here...

Kelvin gets to be the guy with guidance from great professionals in Avant and Cotchery, not get into some competition with a guy who would probably feel threatened and put that unnecessary chip on that shoulder and do everything in his power to make sure the young guy "knows his place."

You're fooling yourself if you believe Smitty is the type of player to mentor a young player, which probably played a part in his release (not as big as salary implications, etc but a part nonetheless.)

Actually you're very wrong in saying that Smitty hasn't been a great mentor the last several years. It's been pretty well documented that he has been developing our young WRs for some time now. To channel my inner John Fox though, "it is what it is". What's done is done, and we have who our roster says we have, and we let 'em off the hook!

and who did he develop exactly?

he just bullied them.

I don't have the time, nor are you worth the effort to go through the archives to find every single transcript where players, and coaches praised him for his leadership with the team, especially with the WRs.

Perhaps you should pay more attention before throwing around ignorant one liners that are not true in a feeble effort to try and make your point.

because you can't name a single wideout that developed while he was here

Can't speak for anyone else, but I don't hate him. He is no longer a Panther, so it doesn't matter.

Some of us Panther fans are fans of the Carolina Panthers team, not Carolina Panthers players.

You can feel how you do and that's fine, but you act like your way is better than our way. You have favorite players that you like even when they go somewhere else. I have a favorite team that I will root for anyone on it (see DeCoud and Harper). Neither of us are right, and neither are wrong. We just have a different view.

some of you need to realize you're not caught between the binary of blind dick-riding and pure unadulterated hatred for a player the moment he's off the team

i for instance love steve smith to death and he's my favorite player of all time but i also recognize things are better the way they are and i can make valid, objective criticisms of him in spite of my love for him and my belief that things are better this way

I completely agree. I'm criticizing the guy who has all of the sudden decided that Steve Smith never helped the team. As you said, I'm a fan of the Panthers, but Steve Smith was arguably the best player on the Panthers for a decade or so. Negating what he did for this team for so long just because he isn't a Panther anymore is just illogical.

the problem is half of you have been watching smitty since you were playing with dolls and sleeping with a night light so you feel like your childhood crush has moved away

its understandable. disgusting, but understandable.

And you pretend like Steve Smith is the worst thing that has ever happened to the team. Don't disregard what he meant to this squad. It's not "dick riding" to acknowledge where he took this team and what he did for us for so long. I love this team for what it is now and I wish Steve the best of luck with the Ravens. But stop pretending like this team would've been better off over the past 13 seasons without Steve.

Valid point, but here's a counter. At 35, he posted better #s than anyone 25 and under in week 1. Other than Allen Hurns that is.

Here's a counter to your counter.  It's week 1 and he's old, and most of it came on one big busted play.  If not for that busted play he's looking at 50 yds receiving with 4 drops.

2007 - 2nd round - Dwayne Jarrett

         - 4th round - Ryne Robinson

2010 - 3rd round - Brandon LaFell

                            - Armanti Edwards

2011 - 5th round - Kealoha Pilares

2012 - 4th round - Joe Adams

Starting in 2005, those are all the wide receivers the Panthers have drafted. You can make a valid argument that Hurney just flat out missed when drafting wide receivers, but in the cases especially of Jarrett, LaFell and Adams, it's not like these guys were scrubs coming out of college. Who knows what influence Smith had on these guys good or bad, but when you attempt (however feebly) to address the need for the future at wide receiver for 8-9 years and you wind up with nothing, it does suggest a trend that perhaps goes beyond management, especially given how well Kelvin has performed.

The Panthers did try to get him a number 2....don't forget Keyshawn.

Problem is Steve is out for himself.  It going to be funny when a solid number 2 emerges right after Smitty's gone.  I honestly think Steve made all his wr teammates worse just because of his domineering presence.

So if not for the busted play (x clown) against the Rams to ; oh wait he was a Panther then, so he beat the CB riiight? It's only a busted play if he's a Raven. I forgot that most of this board adopted the no loyalty to Steve the second Dave cut him.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
