I wouldn't look too much into it. The dude is always on, it's his nature (this is the most pissed off I've ever seen him in ten plus years though).

His last year here he seemed like his normal self to me, with the "Ice Up Son" and talking poo after any routine catch. It didn't show up in the stats though obviously but he was always chippy.

 

lol smith was fine last year in Shula's snail offense. he even gave the speech after early loses that was quoted to have motivated the locker room. He was fuging tired of losing. hell just in penalty yards alone he drew every other game was a reason to keep him. how he mind fuged the DB's and caused the OTHER TEAM to get off their game. It's amazing how panther "fans" are twisting this into him being a locker room problem, or spinning it like he gets ejected or costs the panthers yards. And somehow people are bringing in his stats, ignoring he was injured at the end of last year and MISSED games. I guess cam missing a game or two this year is making him expendable too?

I really wish I could've recorded Steve's interview on WFNZ about a week or two before Dave cut his ass.

They were talking about the salary cap problems, Cam's looming extension, etc. When asked if he'd take a pay cut, Steve said absolutely not. Then he started laughing. Even when they asked if he'd take a pay cut if it meant winning more games he said no. He said he wants his money and isn't giving a dime back. Then they talked about how WRs get upset when they don't get the ball and asked him if he'd be okay with fewer touches if it meant winning more games. Again, he said absolutely not and that he would be mad and demand the ball. He straight up said at this point in his career he is "chasing numbers" and his #1 focus is reaching career receiving marks. Later on they talked about Moose and how Carolina needed a #2 beside him. Steve interrupted and said he didn't wanna go there because it wasn't "his job to draft or develop young WRs". His only job is to catch the ball.

That interview kinda pissed me off. It's one thing to play for the money & be focused on career achievements. It's entirely different to go on the radio and laugh about it.

I'd almost put money down that DG approached Steve and asked him to take a pay cut if he wanted to stay and retire a Panther. I find it hard to believe Dave would just cut Steve without even telling him what was coming. Steve, live on the radio, said he wouldn't take a pay cut for any reason. He forced Dave to cut him so he'd still get paid here plus whatever he found in FA. The team isn't gonna come out and blast Steve over it, though.

Bullshit!  Smitty has love for Jerry Richardson, the Panthers organization, many of his ex-teammates, and the city of Charlotte. His beef is mainly with Gettleman and the way that he was shown the door. He never thought he was bigger than the Panthers, and it's sickening and tiresome hearing this propaganda propagated by fans who obviously have some ax to grind or feelings of ill will towards a guy who gave his 100 percent on the field.  That's what's truly disgusting.

Love me some Smitty. Gettleman has been here only a couple of years. Steve was here for what, 13? Steve Smith forever, baby. Love that fire.

 

That fire is cool when you're dominating opponents in 2005, but it gets old when you catch a 4 yard out route on a 3rd and 10 and start chirping and spinning the ball. Smitty supporters will see that and say "Yeah, he's still got it!" when in reality the punt team is coming onto the field.

 

This franchise and this fanbase stuck up for him when he punched teammates on multiple occasions. If he truly is that mad about how things transpired, I feel sorry for him. You can't go through life holding grudges, especially when there's no reason to hold one in the first place.

 

In that "couple of years" Dave Gettleman is now 13-4 in the regular season with a playoff appearance. I think I'll take his side.
