Has anyone that's watched the combine been as impressed as I have with Chad Jackson from Florida? I believe he measured at 6'1 and ran a 4.32 and in the few drills I saw with the QB's is catching everything thrown his way. Mayock said coming into the combine he was a mid-round pick, I have a feeling with his performance that's probably changed. I think it would be great to have him along side Smitty, and he'd be worth that 1st round pick.

C.J. Wilson, Cornerback

Name Game: The Texas Rangers have a baseball player (a relief pitcher) by the same name, and so does East Carolina's football team (a senior defensive tackle).

Background: The Panthers selected Wilson in the seventh round of the 2007 draft after he started 25 games and had nine interceptions at Baylor.

What you need to know: This is Wilson's big chance to earn a major role on the team. He's competing to be a part of the nickel defensive package and to have a backup role at cornerback. He's being pushed for the nickel job by two rookies, second-round pick Sherrod Martin and seventh-round choice Captain Munnerlyn.

Observations

Most of Wednesday's morning and afternoon practices were held in a steady drizzle – the first time in recent memory the Panthers have had that kind of weather at training camp.

Receiver Steve Smith attended both practices, but stayed on the sideline or on the exercise bike. He wasn't wearing a sling to support his injured right shoulder.

During his time on the bike in the morning, he was reading a book. When he walked around, Smith seemed to be able to move his right arm rather freely.

The Panthers appear ready to face someone other than their teammates. Two more scuffles broke out, this time between linebacker Jon Beason and backup tight end Andrew Davie, then a few minutes later between guard Duke Robinson and linebacker Dan Connor.

It's probably good news that the first exhibition of the preseason is Monday at the New York Giants.

Beason intercepted a Jake Delhomme pass during a red zone drill and – per defensive coordinator Ron Meeks' policy – set off for the opposite end zone, about 80 yards away. Before he got there, though, he lateraled to safety Charles Godfrey. Safety Chris Harris wanted the ball too, but Godfrey took it the rest of the way.

“I want some love too!” Harris shouted.

QUOTING

“Everybody has a shot. Even though Detroit had a bad season, they could be one of the front-runners this year, so you never know.” –Panthers center Ryan Kalil on NFL parity, though giving the Lions, 0-16 last season, that much credit might have been a reach.

“I don't want to stir anything up. My point is it's not something in the works at this minute, no. But, again, I don't know what happens day to day in this game. It's always changing. Who knows? I don't want to really say no to anything.” – Coach John Fox responding to whether the Panthers could sign former Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick.

QUICK HITS

Smith had a nice, but subtle, strut as he walked toward the sideline during the morning practice Wednesday.

Rookie defensive tackle Corvey Irvin had to be encouraged by the praise he received from defensive line coach Brian Baker (Nice job!) after one play.

Receiver Dwayne Jarrett's play stood out in the morning practice. He had a particularly nice catch of a pass from Delhomme for a touchdown during drills near the goal line.
