So you're willing to acknowledge the differences between man and woman but not women and child? Your average ten year old is not 140 lbs unless you live in Minnesota. And the differences go beyond physical. Mental, in both the development comparison as well as the human experience comparison offer a substantial advantage towards women over a pre-pubescent child. It's easier to manipulate a child than it is to manipulate a woman.

I'm fine acknowledging there are differences between women and children. And everything you listed and more is why laws are different. Same for men and women.

No way am I saying he should have done what he did, nor do I think it's OK to retaliate because someone pissed you off or hit you first.

I'm simply saying that I don't think the sex of the person hit makes it any worst and that there have been multiple incidents with players on on our team punching guys and it's been praised or treated like it's not that big of a deal.

Really only the first sentence in that was addressed to you, I was elaborating on a point after it. The structure is a little confusing and I probably could have used a good line break in that post.

But many of the people on here wouldn't mind being sadistically violent to another guy for something as stupid as being cut off in traffic, yet act like they'd turn the other cheek to a woman just so they could stake claim to being righteous, so I'm not surprised you're getting that vibe from some of the posters itt.

So, if man vs woman isn't a fair fight, what about man vs. car? I'm looking at you, donte stallworth and marshawn lynch.

I've always thought that societal stigma against crimes on women are a remnant of the times when women were viewed as property.

Did anyone ever take the time and look into the size of the guys Smitty hit? If the wrongness level of the act hinges on size deferential you'd think that would have been brought up.  What about when the news broke that Beason hit a dude in a bar, I imagine there aren't many guys out there bigger than Beason. At the time size didn't matter. Imo all assault should be treated the same by the league regardless of sex.

I agree with this, especially in the era of gender equality. The reason that Rice's action was so wrong was not because his victim was a female but because his victim was so much physically weaker than him. There is a fundamental tension between all this "A man should never lay his hand on a woman" rhetoric and the notion (I uphold) that men and women should be treated equally. Feminists should find the rhetoric offensive. The belief that men and women should be afforded equal respect means that assaults of physically weaker men should generate just as much outrage as assaults of physically weaker women.

(Now, it may be that the Ray Rice situation deserves greater outrage than the Beason situation given that Ray Rice decked someone less powerful than him who he was in a loving relationship with; that means Rice's action was a betrayal of a loved one and is thus extremely harmful psychologically. But again, that additional harm does not depend on his victim's being a female.)

Edit: Fixed typo.

Well said. I should have penned my argument to reflect more of the physically strong versus weak. Instead I got invested in saying that men assaulting women is essentially a stand in for physically stronger assaulting physically weaker.

I apologize Cat. I see how my comments could be seen as offensive. I would just try to say that when someone engages in violence with such clear ability to inflict harm upon another party, as was done here with Ray Rice, it should be viewed as a more serious crime.
