Does anybody know what the purpose of the different color slip-over helmet caps are and who wears them? Just curious.

Yeah, I wondered about that too, but drew that conclusion. You have both defensive and offensive players on the return team, so you have to differentiate them from the kicking team, which has a similar mix...
