Cam's deal better be close to Kaepernick. I'd go crazy if he gets anything more. I like Cam, but not enough to give him 24mil a year.

As much as I hate saying it, I feel like Luck is going to set the benchmark at about $30 million annually & Cam is not gonna be shown up due to his competitive nature... That's why it's imperative to sign Cam before a Luck deal comes through

The cap had a significant jump this past year & another one is expected after this current season... So the nfl is trying to solve the problem by throwing more money in the pot, which won't do anything but balloon the value of the next contract given out

Be careful what you wish for.  Max contracts are counterproductive to the competitive balance that the salary cap is intended to achieve.

 

If a team wants to pay a quarterback 50 million then so be it.  They are going to have to give up production in other areas.  Either way every team is working with the same cap.

 

Think about the NBA.  As it stands right now a team can have 3 max players (or very close to max).  Of which one of those could be LeBron. LeBron at max is one of the best deals in the NBA when you consider other players that have less talent then him are also at max.  Now it becomes about which team the best players want to group up on.

 

If there were no max contracts LeBron would most likely be the highest paid player.  A team might have to pay him 40-50 million.  At this point they wouldn't be able to sign other high dollar players.  This creates balance.  As it stands right now the NBA free agency is more like recruiting in college sports.

 

I doubt this would ever happen but what if a team decided to put all of their money into the rest of the team and just plan on having a QB on a rookie contract at all times.  Part of the reason Seattle has been able to acquire all of their talent is because they have a QB making so little.  Would they be better off by letting Wilson go at some point and keeping their other talent or paying Wilson 20 million and losing talent at multiple positions?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think Cam will work out a team friendly deal. I'm convinced he wants to win a Super Bowl more than signing a ludicrous contract.

I hope so, I mean, what can you buy with 140mil that you can't buy with 100? It would be awesome to see him sign a super small contract so we could afford some lineman, 6/60mil would be perfect for the team haha

It's very hard to compare basketball to football, very much like comparing apples to oranges... It's evident that you can win in the NBA using such a tactic, the Heat made 4 straight finals doing so but there are only 5 players on the court at a given time & football is more team oriented than basketball.

With different players playing offense & defense you have 22 starters instead of 5... Also football requires more depth so you probably need 35 good players, which it would be difficult for 35 players to collude their ways onto the same team.

Last year the Seattle Seahawks had only one player make more than $10 million (TE Zach Miller at $11 million) so you can make an argument of keeping a rookie QB at all times, but I doubt Seattle would've gotten out of the NFC without Wilson.

I'm for max contracts to create a more uniform distribution of contracts, to be able to keep the productive players on your team... We'll see what happens with Seattle, seeing as they've handed out huge extensions & have Wilson to still extend
