Peter King: Cam Newton virtually assured of starting next week.

Coach Ron Rivera said Cam Newton (ribs) is expected to play in Week 2.

Rivera got the best of both worlds. He won a road game Sunday with Derek Anderson as his starting quarterback and also bought Newton's ribs another week of rest in the process. Although Cam wasn't happy with the decision to hold him out, he'll now be less susceptible to aggravation. Newton will be a solid QB1 in a home game against the Lions next week.

Guys, this could end up being a very ugly downward spiral. Its a real possibility because of the amount of practice time Cam lost, the off season ankle surgery and now the ribs problem that we could have a QB controversy brewing.

What happens when Cam clearly struggles due to his injuries and little to no chemistry? you know good and well fans will be calling for DA. All it takes is one stellar performance by the backup for fans to keep it in the back or their mind.

Dont get me wrong, its a good problem to have when you have a backup thats that good, but still a problem nonetheless. Cam needs to come out against the Lions next week and play with an exclamation mark that he is back and can play like we know he can period.

If the current injury was connected to the ankle injury, then we could have a QB fight, but it's not. I don't think we have long-term concern in the injury.

Having very good competition will keep Cam on his toes and hopefully get the very best out of him.

So we're going with the minimum amount of weeks it takes for the ribs to heal instead of the maximum to lessen the risk of further injury? This means he's still going to be playing a little hurt. Just like he would've this week against a divisional opponent. I guess it's a risk we're willing to take. Still believe he should've started today if this is what we're doing.

Come on man. Everyone knows cam is the man if he is healthy. As far as chemistry goes, you do realize they practice during the week right?
