3rd Downs must improve this year

That Football Outsiders book this year said that the Panthers very seldom ran when they went 3 wide. I think P55 has a valid point about playcalling. Hope Davidson did some self-scouting on playcalling and tweaks that a bit. Maybe Goodson will aid that also being that he could be a threat to catch or run out of that set if he pans out. I would love if they had a Kevin Faulk. He is MR. third down.

Well based on TC and the fact we are throwing out of 3TE sets, we are addressing that issue. Even better is that we have that option, considering we have 3 good/decent receiving threats at that position. I can only imagine what is going to happen with a bit more time for Davidson to develop.

I think we need to remember that last year was really his first year drawing up and calling plays, since when Jake went down we really had to limit our playbook.

Oh I wasn't downing Jeff D. I think you are right & I am a BJDJS...:P

Gameday playcalling takes awhile to get good at. I expect him to be even better this year. Moose seemed to suggest recently that JD knows his guys and what they can do a lot better now too.

I think that's a valid point and hope to see evidence of him opening things up...

And the more I think about all this the more I can't wait to see our offense this year. I mean we really hit our stride towards the end of last year and it's only gonna get better now that the OL is fully intact for consecutive years since Fox took hold, Davidson's playcalling is going to be more polished, Jake has another year back from injury, DJ seems to have made a big push to improve his standing and now we have Goodson as well. I can't wait.

I think that's a valid point and hope to see evidence of him opening things up...

We'll see it, I mean just the fact that he wants to throw out of 3TE sets shows he wants to really push the boundaries compared to last year.

We were so good on first and second down that when we did get stopped on those two downs it usually didn't end well for us. I'm much more worried about our defense on third downs.

Third down we can be good. Fresh rushers at DT, DE; competition at nickel. It's first and second down that bothers me more, not situational pass D.

3rd downs wont be a problem this year because I think we're going to pick up a lot of yardage on 1st and 2nd downs

I also think a thing we might focus on is running up the clock on the offense, which I dont think will happen cause we're going to score quick

That is if our ENTIRE offense is used

Plus on third and short we were number 1 in the league converting 79%.
That statistic is overrated. 83% of people will tell you that!

(j/k)

Yes, I remember the days when 3rd and short was a problem for us. Foster lining up, run up the gut, no push from the line, Foster running right into an ugly, 3rd and 1 became 4th and 2 and we punted/kicked a field goal.

It felt good last year to not be worried about those 3rd and shorts. :D
