Is Shula waiting till Sunday to use the double TE sets?

The Shula hate is retarded. He was actually amazing minus one or two games. Offense made our defense and defense made out offense. Throw in excellent special teams and we were one well oiled machine.

I expect kb is going to provide some explosion though. Shula schemed within the talent, made cam a better decision maker.

If I was the OC and someone gave me LaFell and Hixon as my only WR red zone targets, (outside of being pissed off) I would not trust them on 3rd and goal. I could barely trust them to convert a 1st down at midfield.

Now you give me Kelvin Benjamin, Jerricho Cotchery, Brandon Williams, Ed Dickson, and possibly Stephen Hill (if he gets those eyes fixed) as my WR red zone targets to pair with Olsen. Now Olsen gets freed up in the red zone. Money! I have plays for days for that group in the red zone on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th down. Bring on the 2 TE sets. I can even see some nasty 3 TE sets in the red zone with Benjamin out wide and a single back in Stewart or Tolbert with Cam on some option passes, and play action roll outs.

Stephen Hill is my 5th option on that list. If this were 2013, he would be my #1 red zone option over LaFell and Hixon. Think about that regarding the disastrous WR change that will lead them to 5-11 according to the media know-nothings.

Ppl talk about scheming around your talent like it's no big deal and so easy to do. Nobody does that minus maybe the patriots even then Brady had one of his worst statistical seasons. And bill is supposed to be a god. We didn't trust our receivers minus Greg. They were terrible in hindsight. Smitty was clutch but he didn't provide any burst or explosion. Smitty was solid.

What Shula was able to do with cam was miraculous. I beast like newton who actually listened to his coach not only shows shulas competency but it shows he knows what the fug he is doing. Newton improved tenfold as a qb last year. It was remarkable. This is a team game ppl tend to forget that

How does this work with Cam's looming contract?

Cam's contract the first 2 years will be cap friendly perhaps 10 the first year at most which is only 3 more than this year. It will escalate each year after that until it peaks around 20 or more as you go. Still we are spending 31 million on Hardy and Johnson and you have kuechly and Star coming behind Cam. Unless we get rid of both Hardy and Johnson, The big money is still going to the defense and it would be more lopsided if we were paying so much for running backs.

I am not sure Starr becomes a Suh like contract.  There is a ton TON Ton TOOOON of wothy cap space next year.  Granted some will be spent but it will change the Panthers future in a way the last 5 Hurnial years didn't

Hard to predict what he will get in a few years. Gettleman does like his hog mollies and Star is one of his own.

OMFG.. I am absolutely loving the clear headed thinking regarding what Shula was trying to do in this thread.. Compared to last year man.. Im afraid to say it but the huddle is starting to come around.. I know not everyone because there are definitely the loud mouth breathers that rant and rave and constantly complain about him because they don't actually understand the fug was going on in front of them but.. Gah.. I are so proud of the huddle right now.

Shula's only year we went 12-4.

10th in yards per drive, 11 in pts per drive, 7th in fewest TO per drive. All that with an iffy cast around Cam.

What exactly didn't work? Boring football is boring. But winning is all that matters

Maybe I should have clarified what I was trying to say.....I wasn't implying that something currently didn't work or didn't work last year. I was merely talking about the Shula's usage of our resources....their potential vs their application during this season. I'm the last guy on the bus to bash one of our coaches just for the sake of getting frantic........

More Shula hate. Dive into the stats and find me one meaningful statistic that shows Shula is not among the top OCs of the NFL last season. Any statistical category with significance had the Panthers ranked between 2nd to 15th in the NFL.

There is one area the Panthers were weak in on offense compared to the rest of the league. That would be red zone receiving threats.

Points per drive - Rank 10th - 1.99 ppd
Avg. Drive Time - Rank 2nd - 3:00
Yards/Drive - Rank 10th - 29.8 y/d
Turnover % - Rank 7th - 9.4%
First Downs/Drive - Rank 7th - 1.9 1st/d
Scoring Drive % - Rank 12th - 36.5%

The Panthers offense dominated at home.

@Home
Scoring Drive % - Rank 5th - 43%; Chargers, Saints, Cowboys, and Broncos were the only teams with more productive offenses at home.

The Panthers offense scored 25.9 ppg at home. (38-34-30-30-27-24-17-7) How quickly we forget.

Comparable offenses at home to the Panthers: Packers, Colts, Lions, and Bears.

While the defense was the one getting attention, the offense was just as good at home. The most impressive statistic was the production from the offense and defense together at home. Only 5 teams in 2013 had a point differential over 12.5 points at home. Saints, Bengals, Broncos, Seahawks, and Panthers. The Broncos were the only team to maintain that point differential for all 16 games.

The true measure of an offensive coordinator is their ability to move their offense into the red zone.

The ability to convert in the red zone is highly dependent on personnel and player execution. That is why Chris Scott, Brandon LaFell, and Steve Smith are no longer here.

The following details what is holding the Panthers offense back - especially on the road.

You need receivers who can convert 60%+ of their targets in the red zone. In 2013, this was the role of LaFell and Hixon. We all know Hixon was always injured and LaFell was inept. Correct this and the rest will fall into place. When anyone talks about the receiver situation being a problem, all you need to do is remember what the Panthers could not do in the red zone last season. Better hands and bigger targets are needed and the Panthers now have them.

If you want to hate the system Shula brings to the Panthers, I take no issue with any of those arguments. His system will minimize drives by both teams in a game, will balance the offense, and will not rely on chucking the ball all over the field 50 times a game. You cannot say Shula's system did not produce or was at the bottom of the league. That is completely unfounded wherever you look.

funny its not leading to points
