Gerald McCoy Best DT in NFL?

You're right in that I've watched all of Star's games as a Panther and I know what he's capable of. Sorry if I missed McCoy's wonderful talent in the beating he received from us last year.  He did disappear when he played us, just like you're going to disappear after Sunday....I know that much.  Chris Scott stole his cookies.

Now this is a more sincere take even if it has smack in it. Here is a snippet from Profootballfocus' ranking of McCoy as the 4th best player of NFL last year.

"

What makes McCoy’s performance so impressive is that he was doing it with virtually no help from anyone else on the Buccaneers’ front. Really, it’s tough to overstate how much McCoy was on his own there. He ended the season with a +57.3 grade overall, but was the only Tampa Bay defensive lineman to earn a positive grade for the season. The rest combined for a -84.7 grade! Despite the total dearth of threats outside of McCoy, teams were still unable to prevent him from causing problems inside and if anything he got stronger as the season went on, collecting a sack in his last four consecutive games."

He has had games where he looked like a non factor because he received more than enough attention from opposing O-lines to where he seemed invisible and none of his teammates utilized that opportunity. We've made some additions in Johnson, who at least generated a healthy number of pressures and made his presence known, and Clinton McDonald, who in very limited snaps displayed great value as an interior pass rusher while playing Nose. It is to be seen if anything positive comes out of this and I have my hopes high.

Yes if the Bucs lose handily I may not show up around here until our next match up. What would I be saying really? I already predicted this game to be 60-40 in favor of Panthers. If McCoy looks invisible however I will make it a priority to come here and concede that against Panthers and scrambling QB like Newton at least, he isn't much of a factor.

I'd put Ngata and Atkins over him, and McCoy on the same level as Suh.

A different topic for different day, but Ngata has been one of the more overrated DTs in the last decade. He is a great DT no doubt, but the amount of popularity he gets over someone like Justin Smith who plays the same position and puts out a clinic on the field (or used to) on a weekly basis is disproportionate.

He's the ultimate run clogging space hog. Nobody even tries to run up the middle against him these days.

Justin Smith isn't a NT like Ngata

I've already told you that I think McCoy is a very good player.  I just prefer what Star brings to the table especially for us.

But yeah.....there's no way he's the 4th best player in the NFL. I laughed at that.   He might be the 4th best player on our team if he played for us.  Best player on the Bucs....no doubt.

Not really.  They just have different roles.

A 0 technique tackle and 3 technique tackle do totally different things, even in a 43. I mean, sure, they're both DTs, but it's like comparing Wes Welker to Randy Moss. They're both awesome at what they do, but they do totally different things.
