This makes perfect sense, it really does.  I will play Devils advocate though...

 

The Panthers have throughout their history tried to rely on and wait for Receivers to develop.  This has proved ineffective.  I would prefer the shotgun approach: draft all the WR's you can and hope some pan out.

 

true--however, WRs do develop-many (around the league, just not in Charlotte) come of age as sophomores.  I think Smitty lived in the heads of these developing WRs--he referred to them as competition more than teammates.  Maybe I am way off base, but there were so many who did not develop here--If the problem is not Smith, it could be the pre-Cam QB play or Hurney.

or just bad luck with the receivers drafted.
