Todd Gurley in the Late First Round?

Based on value and normal availabilty:

1. LT (This draft should be a good one for OTs)

2. DT (we need to remember that Edwards and Cole are old and ending contracts)

3. SS (I am probably OK with DeCoud and Boston --who is developing at FS, but SS is a bit cloudy)

4. OLB (Blackburn is probably gone and Davis is getting a bit old--find a backup LB)

5. DT (we need 2--however, this time, we break the habit of drafting back-to-back DTs)

6. RB (perhaps too high considering we can find them on the waiver wire and in the undrafted free agent market)

7. CB (depth at CB is not a bad thing)

Note I took no WR--Assuming our youth develops this year and we still have a vet or 2 under contract

i actually like this set up. though i do think that we can replace one of those DTs with a WR. one thing is for sure, there is only going to be one or two glaring needs next offseason. BPA will be alot more comfortable for the fanbase is we are simply shoring up some minor weaknesses, as long as the OL (and possibly safety) is improved.

This makes perfect sense, it really does.  I will play Devils advocate though...

The Panthers have throughout their history tried to rely on and wait for Receivers to develop.  This has proved ineffective.  I would prefer the shotgun approach: draft all the WR's you can and hope some pan out.

that has worked so well for the lions.

I hate the idea of taking any RB early in the draft, let alone in the first round.

Think about it in terms of replacement cost.  A mid first round pick will cost you around 2 million in cap space per year over 4 years.  Worst case you sign a proven running back free agent for 2-4 million a year.  Best case you pick up a udfa for less then 500k.  As you can see you aren't getting much value out of that early draft pick.

Now think about an OT in the same scenario.  If you can find a quality tackle with your first round pick you just saved your team 4-8 million from what a quality FA tackle would cost you.
