During the offseason, the cap is counted only by your top 51.  If you counted 90 guys, obviously you'd go way over the cap.

Once the regular season gets here, you have to count everyone.  The top 53, practice squad, injured reserve, every single guy on the payroll.

Oh ok thanks that was a very misleading comment by Caplan

Does this mean our cap numbers will be updated?

Do you mean on sites like Spotrac? I don't think anyone outside NFL management truly knows the cap numbers. Not precisely. But reporters and sites like spotrac try to guesstimate based on what information they have.

I'm sure Gettleman always tracks and plans for these things every day of the year.

Espn gets the full numbers from NFL, but they don't usually report on them though.

I thought this was an accurate number.

Spotrac is usually pretty close to that.

So if a player has incentives in his contract, do you have to assume he'll hit all of them when it comes to figuring your cap hit for that player?

Example: say SF gives Kaeperdick a $12MM base salary, with another $1MM if he makes pro bowl, $4MM for Super Bowl win and another $3MM if he is named league MVP. Now any sane person knows that those things will never happen in a year, but does SF have to count him as a $12MM hit or a $20MM hit when they are figuring out cap numbers?

Because they wouldn't really know those figures until the season is over?

I am taking a guess at this but I think it depends on the language of the contract.  If the bonus if performance based I would assume that money would be counted against next years cap determinations.  Signing bonus, unless prorated, would count up front I think.  Caveat emptor, I know very little about the cap.
