Stephen Hill First Impressions

Ok, so I have a legit question that I honestly want clarification on. Why is it so bad that WRs catch with their body? Have their been any succesful WRs that have catched with their body throughout their career? This isnt a question trying to defend it or defending Hill, I never actually played football and sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but what is so wrong with body catching vs hand catching?

Catching with your body is a big misconception a lot of people have started saying that it is so terrible. The hall of famer Micheal Irvin has said many times that it is a neccesity to catch with you body at times, such as the slant route. Where you have a DB draped all over you from the snap of the ball and you have to secure the ball with out him striping the ball from your hands, while maybe getting hit by another player such as a safety or linebacker.

So no catching with your body isn't as bad as people make it seem. Not saying this is the way you are spose to catch all the time, but some times it is better to catch with your body then catch with the ball extended from your body. And any real receiver would tell you this.

You guys really think Hill with Cam at QB couldn't outperform Ginn from last season? For years people were down on Ginn and were ready to write him off.

Before Cam Ginn had:

51% of his targets result in catches, and 59% of his catches resulted in first downs. He also had a very solid Chad Pennington throw to him during 2008 and had Kap throw to him as a 49er, along with Alex Smith.

Before Cam Hill had:

42% of his targets result in catches, 71% of his catches resulted in first downs. He had Mark Sanchez, He had Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith throwing to him....

Ginn also had just 6 touchdowns catching in 6 seasons as a WR before coming to Carolina where he had 5 last season. Hill had 3 as a rookie which was more than Ginn had in any season until he came to Carolina.

I have faith in our coaching staff.

Its true that catching with your body is sometimes the right thing to do in a situation, but the point is that it often isnt. Youre supposed to catch with your hands because you can reach a helluva lot more distance with your hands than just your body. You shield defenders with your body so that the defenders cant get their arms in and disrupt your catch. Putting the ball two feet further away from the defenders hands gives you an advantage of making the catch more cleanly and then tuck it in tight.

People arent really over doing it when they talk about body catches though. If a receiver commonly catches like this it means he's not bothering to shield defenders and it also may be his preference because he simply cant catch with his hands. It puts stress on the QB and puts him at a much greater risk of hitting a much smaller target for that particular receiver. To a QB, confidence in the receiver weighs a lot.

The idea is that you always go TO the ball, go get it. Dont stand and wait for it or it will get picked. If youre constantly going to the ball then why arent you extending your hands TO the ball. Like I said, theres exceptions like when your about to get nailed across the middle, someone hands are already in your face, the ball is going 2000 mph. . maybe your even wide open and it doesnt matter. There are reasons you body catch and then dont have to worry about tucking the ball, but generally you should always be going to the ball and getting it at either the highest point or the point furthest from the defender. That means extending your hands.

Well Ricky Proehl is about to prove to them that their coaches and offensive system suck. You cannot develop any young offensive player in that crap system they are running.

And honestly what veterans where there to help Hill mature as a person and player? Looking at the 2012 and 2013 there was no one. You had Ed Reed in 2013 but he was there late in the season and honestly looked like he just wanted a check.

I think having veteran receivers like Cotchery and Avant teaching him and having a former receiver as a coach will really help. Plus this team is stacked with leaders and seems like a family more than a team.

Catching with your body isn't necessarily a "bad" thing.

Being a "body catcher" is.

Body catchers don't really high point all that well, and not reaching out and plucking it from the air slows you down.

When I see college WR's leave their feet and body catch on slants and things i cringe.

i think we're talking about 2 different things. he should be doing the jay z or the diamond dallas page sign with his hands. rotate the off hand to the top to control the ball on contact. the way he's doing it in the pic there's nothing to keep the ball from skipping off the top of his hands and continuing on it's path. as far as not being able to see the ball? i don't know. i catch this way and i see the ball just fine

i know what you mean, but I'm just judging from that angle. Sometimes doing what Hill did in that pic is the best way to see the ball all the way through... if the pass had have been positioned better he probably would have yoused the diamond sign to catch it.

If 89 was here, Benjamin is stuttering in the locker room corner as a non-factor, Cam is talking to the media in a monotone voice about how he needs to get better and Stephen Hill landed in Charlotte, met Steve at the baggage carousel and took the next flight to BFE.

It's about the 53, not "me".

Nobody cares what I think, but I will say it anyway...give Ricky this year and next year's OTA's and preseason and Hill can be our #2. Not expecting much this year.

Imma glass half full kinda guy.

;)

just like he did lafells sorry ass, AE, and Dwayne Jarrett.........you guys really over exaggerate to hell and back

    • Agreed on all counts. The thread just read a bit like the Rhule deference that was here early on, and especially in the back and forth with Bridgewater where everyone sided with Rhule and staff over Teddy just because they hated Teddy's play. Look how that turned out.
