Jerricho Cotchery and Jason Avant 's lack of preseason production in limited action doesn't concern head coach Ron Rivera one bit.

"Everything Jerricho Cotchery and Jason Avant have done for us is exactly what we're looking for," Rivera said. "We're looking for very consistent football players who run good routes and know where they need to be."

Calling him a pipe dream and we should give up one him.. yea you can call it putting words in your mouth but I'd say that's about equal to calling him a dumpsterfire.

 

I didn't call him a pipe dream, I said that you guys who continue to expect him to develop into a legit starting NFL OT are under the influence of a pipe dream.  I have no problem with Bell being on the roster.  I'd love to have him as a backup.  But, penciled in to start at LT?  Oh wee mayne.

When I look at the schedule its really really hard to pick out 13 wins. Call it pessimistic if you want, I'm just being honest.

Rivera on Bell:

"He's done such a good job," Rivera said. "I expect him to continue to play well.

"I have confidence that he can do the job for us. He's really taken some big steps."

Bell:

"I'm not satisfied with where I am at right now. My pass protection has been pretty solid, but it can be better."

"I'm out here grinding every day... I'm going to continue to work," Bell said. "I'm trying to get in the top-5 of the league with Joe Thomas and all those guys in the NFL at left tackle. And it starts at practice."

Barring any significant negative change to the Panthers I have them at 5-3 on the road and 8-0 at home. On the low end 4-4 on the road and 6-2 at home. Now this is due to the Panthers young defense getting better, the offense having no significant drop off from the previous season, and a majority of the teams on the Panthers schedule in flux at several key spots. Quite a few teams on the Panthers schedule have actually declined in areas that were strengths from last season.

Expectations are understandably sky-high for the defensive line. Colin Cole said the Panthers – who were #1 in the NFL with 60 sacks last year – are shooting for the NFL single-season sack record of 72 set by the Chicago Bears in 1984.

"That's where our goal is," Cole said.

"We are so deep, especially inside," Dwan Edwards said. "If we can keep guys fresh we'll be at a huge advantage throughout every game.

"You just start thinking about how good we can be with another year under our belt and the same guys. Our young guys are a year better and more experienced. You start thinking we could really be a dominant force."

"Over the last 10 year, only the 2006 San Diego Chargers with 61 had more sacks than Carolina last season...Defensive tackle Colin Cole says the focus in 2014 is to break the NFL record of 72 by the 1984 Chicago Bears. Carolina coach Ron Rivera, who was a rookie linebacker with the Bears in '84, said the Bears were implementing Buddy Ryan's innovative "46 defense'' that blitzed ... well, a lot. Rivera noted how Ryan set a goal for the secondary to give the front seven at least 2.4 seconds to get to the passer. Then there were the great players on that defense like Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael, Mike Singletary and Wilber Marshall. Dent led the way with 17.5 sacks, followed by Hampton with 11.5 and McMichael with 10. Thirteen players had at least one sack, with eight getting three or more -- including Singletary with 3.5.

(in comparison,) sixteen different Panthers had at least one sack last season. Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy led the way with 15, followed by Charles Johnson with 11. Carolina has its entire front seven back with the addition of second-round draft pick Kony Ealy. The Panthers don't blitz nearly as much as the Bears. Many of their sacks came out of the base defense. That makes the '84 Bears record of 72 sacks seem even more unattainable.

"For us as a defensive line, that's where our goal is,'' Cole said.
