Olsen's sons heart defect

So Olsen's son has hypoplastic left heart syndrome also known as Snowman heart. I know this because I was born with the exact same thing and still have the scars to prove it. I had the surgeries at the same age at Presbyterian Hospital here in charlotte.

I'm living proof this can be overcome and I'm 6'5 with no issues. Some of the best heart doctors are in charlotte. Just wanted to weigh in and say it's very survivable.

It truly is but somehow with all the money coming in for cancer that theres still no cure. Maybe one day no one will have to watch a love one die from such a horrible disease, or any disease for that matter.

The problem is that with cancer, each specific type of cancer is totally different. It is like a thousand separate diseases that get lumped under one umbrella and have to share research money.

This is true.  I have a rare form of lymphoma that recurs without a pattern.  I have survived 2 attacks and don't know if a thrid attack will happen or when.  The Drs. said that we might be able to cure many forms of cancer, but researching it is nearly impossible due to HIPPA confidentiality laws.  Research is based on countries with socialized medicine and personal experience.

Samurai,

So good to hear that the physicians at Presbyterian Hospital were able to successfully correct your congenital heart malformation.

I do however not believe that a Snowman heart is the same as hypoplastic left heart syndrome.  The cardiac defect in Snowman heart is an abnormal connection of the pulmonary veins, which should normally transport the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium, to the right superior caval vein, thereby eventually draining the blood into into the right atrium.  In HLHS, the left ventricle, responsible for pumping blood into the body, is severely underdeveloped.  Both situations are congenital heart defects that need surgical intervention, patients with HLHS often need heart transplants.  I am confident that Olsen's son is getting the best care available and that, as a result, he will grow up to be a healthy man, just like you.

PS While I am not a physician, I have dedicated my scientific life to understanding and elucidating congenital heart disease.  Twenty years ago I moved from The Netherlands to the US to join one of the leading research groups in the nation at that time.
