Breaking Down the Safeties

Here is the breakdown of the currenty Safeties on the Panthers roster.

Warning: Not for the faint of heart.

Starters

Roman Harper - Age 31 - Run stuffing vet that is often beat deep in coverage. Recovering from turf toe that kept him sidelined for most of camp and preseason. Mentally there is no issue, solid veteran savvy. Can play cover two with his eyes shut. Physically it is unclear if he can play at a high level.

Thomas DeCoud - Age 29 - former Falcons full time starter since the 2009 season. Good size, 6'2 195lbs.  Struggled through preseason, but should see improved performance once the actual game planning begins. Will not have to cover quite as long once the front Panthers 7 is really going after the quarterback.

Backups

Tre Boston - Age 22 -4th round Panthers rookie who missed all of training camp and preseason after undergoing athletes hernia surgery. Has tremendous potential, but is so far behind it is unclear how much of a difference he can make this season. If the Panthers need to start a 4th round rookie that missed camp and preseason, it could get ugly. He will be targeted early and often.

Colin Jones - Age 26- 4th year vet, drafted in the 6th round of the 2011 draft by San Francisco. Saw limited snaps in 2013 when he accumulated 7 tackles. Has played relatively well this preseason. Played the majority of snaps in 2 preseason games.

Outlook:

This is the second most concerning group for the Panthers. DeCoud is a serviceable vet and should perform well enough. Roman Harper lost a lot of speed last year on indoor carpet. His speed on outdoor turf is yet to be seen. Could be a liability in big play passing downs. Overall, do not be shocked if the Panthers again this season shore up their safeties with the addition of a free agent or two, as they did in 2013.

This looks like the position for potential new players to be brought in, we saw it last year with Mikell who btw is still out there to be had again this season, also there are guys like Duke Ihenacho who was pretty good last year except for the SuperBowl and on the veteran side a guy like Danieal Manning was also cut.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of those 3 guys getting picked up, especially if Boston is heading for IR anyway

They definitly need some help. The fact that they are #28 in line is a problem. After every cut gets sifted through there may not be much left worth signing.Maybe a backup here and there. The downside of having a good season and no cap room to sign free agents.

Mikell isn't out there. He had surgery a few weeks ago and retired.
