Is Cam Newton Really A Franchise QB

You don't need to be elite to be a franchise QB.

Brady, Brees, Peyton and Rodgers are amazing QBs. They're rare.

You don't pass on a young, great talent where the skys the limit in favor of something that might be.

Luck, Ryan, RGIII, Wilson, Cam, Kaep. All good, solid QBs. Elite maybe not. But these are franchise pieces. QBs you build around.

It's funny how this forum responds to any negative criticism of Cam. All of OP's thoughts are reasonable.

Not quite. He IS a franchise QB. He is in his 4th year, so no he isn't perfect. He still has stuff to learn. And you don't take away his running ability to compare him just because it is something Brady and Manning can't do. That makes Cam even more valuable. Cam's passing will improve especially when he gets some consistency with his receivers.

But at the same time, every team and fan base wants / desires an elite qb.

I believe he is. Cam still has a lot of work to do tho if he wants to be the best. Atm, he's still depending too much on his talent/natural ability. Needs to become a smarter player.

I mean it's so hard to find a QB today. Cam is the closet thing to a franchise QB. However, I wouldn't want to give him a massive upcoming deal just yet. A good one, but not crazy.

I think Cams athletic ability is both a plus and a minus.

If not for his athletic ability and size, which are elite, he would not be able to survive with our Oline.  On the other hand, his mechanics are still that of a guy who knows he can quickly fall back on his running ability and take off.  He still has a tendency to throw flat footed, off his back foot, etc.

A two edged sword
