Is Cam Newton Really A Franchise QB

How is it that, after all the time and discussion that's gone into this topic on here, people still don't understand that there are different styles of quarterback?

Newton isn't a precision passer like Manning, Brady or Breed, so comparisons to them are empty.

Newton is a gunslinger, a 'scramble and gamble' QB whose passes are sometimes perfect and occasionally out there.

As such, he compares properly to guys like Favre, Elway and Bradshaw.

Are those guys franchise QBs?

I understand he is a different type of QB. I just don't think he has reached his full potential in his passing abilities. Just this offseason Rivera talked about how his footwork improved and he didn't have that last year. Every year Cam has made great improvements. Last year he improved on becoming a leader and trusting his receivers. He still has a lot to learn and improve on. He is still young so he has plenty of time to improve. We don't know how Rodgers looked his first few years and Brady wasn't elite for 4 years. Cam is entering his 4th year.

Also I believe that even though there are different styles of quarterback all quarterbacks must have certain abilities to be successful.

I'm just speechless that there's still fans like them out there. Cam has broken numerous records as a 25 year old and he's somehow being doubted? The fact that Ginn is now on the bubble at Arizona (losing his job to two rookies by the way) and LaFell is at best a #4/5 with The Patriots, and Cam soaking in five offensive systems in seven years with a makeshift OL... speaks volumes about Cam's talent. He's 90% of our offense. Without him, we go 4-12 at best.

God forbid he overthrows his receiver occasionally or makes a bad decision. Maybe we need to bring Teh Jimmeh back or pick up Pryor to showcase how fortunate we are to have an athletic freak who can actually throw the ball from the pocket with accuracy.

I'll tell you what if Ginn gets cut, we should bring him back

Cam is 25 and entering his 4th year after playing only one year of big time college ball (a lot of people forget that). He can definitely improve and has his flaws but all of you whining because he isn't Brady/manning/Rogers yet (3 seasoned vets each with 8+ years of experience and rare ability) are just impatient and ungrateful of the talent we have, and what he has done to put the franchise back on the map, like most philly fans were with Mcnabb.

Not every franchise QB is a Manning or Brady. Those two may well be the two best QB's to ever play the game. Using those guys as the minimum benchmark for a franchise QB just isn't fair.

Cam is as much a franchise QB as Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, etc. Is he a Manning/Brady? No; but who else is? Brees and Rodgers might have an argument to be put near that category, but that's it.

I understand. He just miss to many throws in my opinion. Thats all the difference between Drew Brees and Ryan Fitzpatrick

He misses too many throws? Cam has a better completion stat than andrew luck who the media is in love with. Honestly you just need to be aware that you are no professional when it comes to analyzing qbs. Cam will be franchised by the panthers and he will be the qb until he probably retires. If you can't handle that then that's on you.

that's all the difference between fitzpatrick and brees? really?

cam had a better rating and comp% than brady and luck last year.

how many QBs would you put ahead of cam? rivers? flacco? ryan? luck?

i mean what is your standard? how many is too many "miss throws" to be considered a franchise QB?

does production not factor into the equation? just being a passer that doesn't miss his targets (or have them bounce off the numbers and out of the hands like with smitty, lafell, and ginn?)

Top 5, top 10, number 15 , whatever. Cam is a game changer who when he is on is a top. 5 quarterback that day. Often the best for our team and our situation. That is why he is a franchise quarterback for us regardless of the definition. Sure there are smarter guys in their thirties who are better than him and can read defenses quicker or guys with better mechanics. That isn't the point really. Our team is built around him and and will be for the next decade. The issue is where he is on the journey and hoping he keeps growing as well as he has in only 3 years. After all I still remember when the consensus was it would take 2 years to even be ready to start in the league. He has surpassed my expectations by a lot and I was one of his biggest supporters from day 1. Anyone spending time disparaging him doesn't have perspective. He is our franchise quarterback for better or worse. So I am just sitting back enjoying the show hoping we score 24 a game by any means. With as much money invested in the defense as we have, you arent going to have the money to spend as much on the offensive side of the ball especially after what we have committed from previous contracts. You lock up a great talent like Cam and give him weapons through the draft and whatever you can afford while unloading bad contracts. In a few years you are in great shape while staying competitive along the way. Cam is the right guy at the right time in our franchise right now. I would think most panthers fans would feel similarly. What have you got to lose outside of a negative perspective

I agree. I will even throw Eli Manning into the mix.

But God, for as much as I love him and he's my QB, I pray Cam uses his head much better than Eli. Gunslinging should come with some wisdom.
