For Those Concerned about Cotchery and Avant:

It's not like last year was 10 years ago. Last year was last year. I suppose your point (which really should apply to this year, and not "any other year of his career") is that between last season and this one, his ability to catch the ball in traffic has taken a huge dive and he'll be totally ineffective. I obviously disagree.

And why would you think I thump my chest about anything? That particular activity never enters my mind. I guess that's your attempt at a put down. Weak. You'll be better off (assuming you really do have a valid point in the discussion) sticking to the topic, as I did, vs. getting personal.

My point is that two of the last three years Cotchery has produced like a fourth or fifth string receiver. And we are going to try him as a three with no fallback option. It could go badly.

Sorry, "thumping your chest" is such a trigger phrase for you.

And I'm stickin' to my point that last season he caught a lot of balls in traffic for TD's, and I think it's likely that he can still catch 'em this season. I'd say that's what Gman was thinking when he made him an offer. I doubt he'll be the main target in the red zone, but I still like him as a solid possession receiver.

And everything could work itself out nicely. Vets produce, and kids grow. It is how good teams work. And believe it or not. We are a good team.

not disagreeing with you. but we have no proven fallback. Bersin, King, and Brown have all impressed. and dont forget about KB and the tight ends. there are plenty of great weapons on this team. if Cotchery does disappoint, hell even if both he and Avant disappoint, i think the Panthers will still be fine just by virtue of the other weapons we have. Cotchery and Avant arent here to be feature WRs. they are here to take the pressure off KB. and the tight ends will take the pressure off the two of them as well

Looking at Cotchery's overall numbers, he seems to have had a fair amount of success, with his first two years with the Steelers being the only bad years.  I don't remember the details of his first two years with Pittsburgh, but maybe it took him a while to integrate with the new QB/Offensive Coordinator.

He simply wasn't being targeted. In 2011 he was sharing targets with Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, Heath Miller, Hines Ward, and Emanuel Sanders and was out for 3 games. In 2012 he was sharing targets with the same minus Hines Ward. The Steelers had numerous receiving options in that time frame.

Then you add to that the issues surrounding Big Ben and the coordinator that were well documented.  When things got back on track last year, Cotchery produced.

Touchdowns are rarely predictive unless you are a Calvin Johnson or some other mammoth receiver. He never got double digits or really even approched it previously. I would chalk it up to a fluky year more than anything. I believe the only reason he had such a large role on offense last season was because of multiple injuries. I don't think he was their designated red zone target or anything.

They may have not been "designed" td plays but cotchery had to work for quite a few of those tds not all of them were because the defense broke down and left him wide open

Smoo could be a shortened version of Big Smooth. A few years ago UNC (Carolina) had a big kid that played center and could shoot the 3 as good as anyone. He was layed back and always in control, never out of control. They called him Big Smooth and his name was Sam Perkins.
