NfL.com: Cam has taken 467 hits or sacks in three years

Why does this magically only apply to Quarterbacks?

It doesn't.

Cam is a rare breed though. If cam has taken double the hits in a three year span in the history of the nfl that would mean our oline would have to be historically the worst oline ever in a span of 3 years. I don't buy that. It's cams playing style. The oline can most definitely be better but it is not epically the worst ever the past three seasons

Who is in denial? No, he won't play 15 years doing what he does.

But why draft Cam Newton if you aren't going to let him be Cam for as long as he can be. Overall he plays smart given his size.

People get hurt in football. Brady, Manning, Rodgers....doesn't matter.

I agree he plays smart for his size but players aren't static, You can draft them with a plan. The greats evolve and suit their game to what's expected of them.

Rogers changed his game when he first got with the packers, Manning is adjusting his style in his older age..etc..

I think Rivera and Cam both want him to be around for a long time and if that means staying in the pocket or sliding more I think they will at least try it before righting it off with "cam will be cam"

You also have to account our play calling like the read option, the designed cam runs. he took hits on those as well. at some point it has to stop. the body will break down

It has been very bad. I don't that's deniable. His running has been a part of that some but he still isn't taking anywhere near the amount of abuse that other players receive with his body. Give him good protection and wideouts that routinely beat their man and it will go down even less. This is also coupled with the fact that he has run less and less every year.

I don't see it as a concern.

Cam is tough. Not worried.

He hasn't taken that many big shots. Most of this contact happens on the short yardage runs.

He is built to take it as long as he isn't taking them head on, or like the hit against the Pats which was an anomaly

Agreed on the first part but I don't think it has been historically bad. And based on the number of hits he's taken it would have to be epically bad. And I mean so bad it would go down as 2012 saints defense bad. I don't buy that.

The second part kind of. Always can use better protection. I don't think anybody here is arguing against a better oline and wr for cam. Part of cams problems early were not being able to go through his progressions quickly enough. We saw a stark change in that last year. The point is cams gonna have to limit his rb mentality as the years go on and focus more on the pocket. We all want cam here for 15 years and not ten. Which is why Rivera and Shula have been doing the things they've been doing. But at the same time , which Rivera has stated cam just flips the switch on his own and you can't stop him when his mind is telling him to run. It's just something to think about and watch for.

I would say most of those hits came in years 1 and 2 for sure though.

Cam is only 25.....he can still be Cam.

Next 2-3 years or so he will have to tone it down some but he will never need to be a pocket player IMO

Also, you can't over worry about injury.....

You could have him be a dink dunk QB and he could have the bad luck of Sam Bradford

Steve Young at age 37 had 70 runs in a season....and they didn't protect players back then like today

Just gotta let guys be what they are IMO

I'd say Cam getting hit are an equal combination of three different parts:

Offensive Line

His style of play

He holds onto the ball too long

I said in another thread. Throw the ball away and save yards, time and hits. Brady and Manning probably lead the league throwing the ball away. It has added years to their career.
