Hurry-Up/High Tempo Offense

Recommended Posts

Does this team have this style of play in their arsenal outside of a two-minute drill? I never see us picking up the tempo and keeping teams off balance defensively and we always seem to barely get our plays off.

Watching the Bengals game right now and they were making the Cardinals defense tire with the hurry up. The Eagles have had lots of success doing this, as have the Saints and Colts.

Is Shula just incompetent in this regard? With a quarterback like Cam and some good run blockers on the interior of our offensive line I think this would greatly benefit our offense this season. Do we not have the personnel to pull it off or is our coaching staff just too reserved?

That kind of style would also be good in taking some of the wear and tear off of Newton by spreading the field and making things faster, reducing his times as a bullseye in the pocket.

I do believe that Pittsburgh is also going to a lot of HUNH with Rapelisberger.  We already know that Denver and NE do it.

But, to answer your question, I think the HUNH is utterly alien to the coaching staff as currently rostered.

I think they'd rather have mumps and measles at the same time than to consider such a move.

It just feels like when we use the entire play clock to get the snap off the defense is always well dialed in and rested just as we are. On second or third and shorts I'd love to see us hurry to the line once in a while and sneak Cam behind Kalil and Amini to keep them off balance. When we huddle up on third and inches I just think we are more apt to get stopped but we have been good in that regard recently.

I just think it's a nice wrinkle our offense would benefit from if we could execute it a handful of times a game.

He runs a ball control O. He wants to play to the D and control the clock. That is what Shula is.....and it worked last year. 12-4.

We can always bring Chud back if people miss the ESPN highlights

I don't miss Chud I just believe adding some hurry up to our offense would benefit our offense. We seem to either go three and out or drive the field for a touchdown.. I think Cam and the rest of the offense need that momentum to sustain drives and a bit of hurry up play would go a long way to give us some momentum early in a series.

We did do it a couple of times last year didn't we?  By no means did we do it a lot, but I seem to remember there was a drive or two where we uncharacteristically went into a hurry-up offense... and actually looked pretty good when we did it.

I'd like to see it used more often TBH.  It also seems to be that Cam has kind of hinted at it a few times over the course of his career he feels more at home in a fast-paced offense.

Whats wrong with running a hurry up offense to pile up points and the go ball control to close out games? If the score gets tight late, open up the throttle again. Sheesh. And with our defense it would be pretty effective...

Well, let's say you go hurry up and have a couple 3 and outs...and the opponent doesn't.

You then are putting the best aspect of the team (defense) in position to get gassed and tired.....and then you lose games. I mean isn't the really what happened under Chud often?

Yeah I too seem to remember an interview or quote from Cam saying sometimes he just wants to go go go or keep the tempo up. I think it's tailored to his game a bit and it would benefit our offense all around. I'm not saying use it every drive or even regularly, but we seem to really build on momentum when we start moving the chains and it could potentially get that momentum going when we are struggling offensively.

In 2011, Our defense couldn't stop anyone and Rivera got super conservative.

In 2012, we would run predictable read option plays in a spread formation, then have Cam under center when we were gonna hand it off to Deangelo or Stewart. We also didn't have many quick strike plays either. Rivera was still conservative.
