I contended Deangelo is the 3rd best RB on the team

When you say RB, are you including Tolbert, and assuming that Stewart is healthy?

If so, I'd think that DWill could very well be the 4th best RB on our team.

Tolbert

Stewart (if healthy)

Fozzy (young, fresh, runs with attitude)

DWill

Yeah Stewart being #1 is a play to play proposition due to feet/ankle issues.

DWill still has huge talent, but I think a fat contract and easy livin' has made him loathe to hit an open (or partially open) hole like he once did.

A change of scenery might be what he needs or something on the field happens that wakes him the hell up.

We're going to continue with the RB malaise until Hurney's contracts are finally purged, until then the Panthers just need to get what they can from what they have.

Possibly with less talent Tolbert and Fozz  ultimately may produce more on the field for various reasons.

I would say almost any 24-25 year old RB is better than any 31-32 year old RB in the NFL. It's not about who the player is or what they have accomplished, it's just about the nature of the position.

So Fozzy who's career YPC in the regular season is 2.8 is better than DeAngelo, who was successful last year with terrible run-blocking, and also better than Fred Jackson who is 33 years old and was a beast in Buffalo last year?

I don't know why people think Tolbert can't be an every down back. I think he can. Especially this year at a lighter weight.

Agreed.

He's also probably our best blocker, both run (in read options/as a FB) and pass.

This place might crash when Shula calls for a Deangelo wildcat play in the first Q at Tampa

I was rewatching the MNF game against the Pats from last season the other night, and we ran that play down in the red zone. For no gain of course. I started cussing the tv and felt my blood pressure rising only before realizing that the game was a year old. It's an automatic reaction.

I caught a little flack from it from JJ and Sammi on the podcast for saying it.

Am I wrong?

Nope.

People seem to be in denial that when a RB gets old he isn't the same RB he once was. There is a percentage of our fanbase that swears he is the close to the 2008-2009 guy.

Williams has entered JAG territory. NFL is full of those guys

Fred Jackson has had 1000 yards once in his career, when he was 26-27. He ran for less than 900 yards last season. DWill had a seriously down year last year with two Pro Bowlers on the offensive line (one of the very few NFL teams to have 2 Pro Bowlers out of the 5 on the offensive line).

Fozzy just hasn't had a chance to shine in a game, thus the reason he runs the way he does, with an attitude.

And it's not Fozzy versus DWill, like you're trying to make it out. It's a young, hungry RB versus an old (by NFL standards) beat-up RB. I'd take the young, fresh one any day of the week.

Conditioning. He may have lost weight, but he is still too soft in the middle to carry the ball 20 times a game.

Deangelo is really bad about fighting through contact. And our scheme/blocking is not good enough to get him in space. Stewart and Tolbert are better fits for us at this time.

But the bigger concern to me is Tolbert at Fullback. He's a crap blocker. He's got short arms and lack of conviction. Go look at the first play of the 2nd half. The Panthers had a nice I formation run drawn up, Tolbert whiffs his block and Stewart bounces outside for a loss. The play was bailed out by a hands to the face penalty but you see that sort of run blocking a ton from Tolbert. I would really like us to get that true Fullback for I formation runs.

Obviously I would prefer if we cut Shula, but as long as he is here, he needs a fullback to run his vanilla offense.

Edit: I should add Deangelo is a crap blocker in pass pro and the running game. If Cam, Tolbert, or a WR runs the ball you can count on Deangelo shying away from contact. It pisses me off, it makes him look like a poor teammate. Brandon Lafell and Steve Smith block harder than Dlo.

    • Agreed on all counts. The thread just read a bit like the Rhule deference that was here early on, and especially in the back and forth with Bridgewater where everyone sided with Rhule and staff over Teddy just because they hated Teddy's play. Look how that turned out.
