"Watch this footwork," Rivera said.

In team drills, Newton takes a five-step drop and quickly delivers an 18-yard strike to first-round pick Kelvin Benjamin on a deep dig route, hitting the wide receiver on the proper shoulder. Next, Newton takes a five-step drop and goes through his progressions, working right and then all the way back to the far left, hitting Benjamin again on a sideline route. The entire drive is clean and crisp.

"Watch this here," Rivera said as Newton barks for tight end Ed Dickson to shift before the snap. "He's getting the guy lined up. A year ago, he wouldn't have done this.

"But it is his mechanics. They are so much better, his footwork is better and his decision making much better. You sit here and watch him and that is most interesting."

It's a few weeks old but it's a good read.

I like these paragraphs about Benjamin, with Cam talking.

The sooner things click for Benjamin — and the learning curve can be steep for rookie wide receivers — the better off the Panthers will be. Whispers are Smith was freelancing too much by the end. Benjamin has to learn the nuances of the pro game before he can be where he's supposed to be and on time every time.

"When it clicks for him, it's going to click for us," Newton said. "As soon as he gets that chip on his shoulder that says there is not a cornerback or safety who can cover me in this game, that is going to be the changing moment for us. That will be the point when it won't matter if he's double covered, man coverage or zone, just give him an opportunity and everybody else will be better off of it."
