AT&T Uverse

I have uverse right now. I get 12mps which is plenty for video games, youtube, downloads, and netflix. But if you have a family where 2 people are streaming netflix, some teenager is downloading music, and your son is playing video games. Then it might be an issue. Right now by myself HBO Go streamed to my smart TV is the only thing that does not stream flawlessly. But that could be my network or the television.

I think you've already made your decision but ATT always comes with hidden cost. No matter how many time you ask them "is this really what I am paying" they will lie and say yes. I was told I would get 6 months free HD, i got 3 weeks. I was told there were no additional fees, I got like 8 bucks in taxes and surcharges. Right now I have u200 with 1 wireless reciever, 12mbps down, HD, and DVR. I am paying like 95 a month. And It was a giant pain in the ass to keep it that low.

As far as service is concerned. This varies greatly by location. It can be your distance from the v-rad box. The quality of your installation. The quality of your local ATT service. The quality of the infrastructure. Even the weather. I lose service for a split second during thunderstorms, it will cause the router and DVR to reconnect which will disrupt service for 30 seconds to a minute. This really sucks when you are recording a live sports event. Sometimes the sound will get an obnoxious buzz and you have to change the channel to fix it. Sometimes you have to restart the whole thing to fix it. Mind you these are very rare occasions but when it happens you will be furious because the service is costing you money. I have a loud buzz at the end of the Saints game last year. The one where we clinched a playoff birth.

As far as picture quality, it's fine. The one thing that sucks is like confetti shots where the screen has so much going on, the picture gets very boxy, kind of digital looking. Not sure if that is uverse, the network signal, or my television.

Samsung Bar

Some guy asked about the wirless Samsung Bar, this is for you. I havea 46" Samsing Smart TV and a Samsung Bar.

Pretty sure this is the one I bought although I paid maybe 175 for it as a bundle. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HW-F450-Channel-280-Watt-Soundbar/dp/B00BLX9510/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1408903549&sr=8-3&keywords=samsung+soundbar

It has Blue Tooth but my Smart TV did not. So I have the Smart TV connected by an optical cable. The sound quality is nice, but not amazing. A real audiophile would be disappointed in this soundbar. It's size is very convenient. It's very simple to move around. I have my tablet connected to it via blue tooth which is nice for Pandora or amazon music. I then bought a 12 dollar blue tooth dongle for my desktop PC so the soundbar also serves as PC speakers but not at the same time. The Blue tooth has the slightest lag at about 20 feet. Maybe just a few milliseconds but your ears can pick it up in certain situations. The lag has never been a problem with video or music.

I really enjoy my soundbar because it's convenient to use with multiple devices. I was content with the sound quality but some would want more. My biggest gripe is the number of remotes I currently have. 1 for smart TV, 1 for Uverse, 1 for soundbar, and finally 1 for my seldom used second TV.

I can't find that model even on samsungs website, are you sure it's a good number? I personally haven't used a combined system like this but was considering getting one for my bedroom and did look into it a little. The website I use for anything AV related is AVS forums and they have all the info you could want on anything AV. Heck, I even learned how to install and wire my home automation system from reading there for a few months before construction. Anyway, they actually do have a soundbar section and it seems a real popular one is the Vizio 5.1 system that just came out recently:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/195-soundbars/1451371-vizio-s-new-true-5-1-soundbar-s4251w.html

As for subwoofer, remember low frequencies vibrate, so although you should get good sound in that cubby hole behind TV, it could vibrate your tv so you would hear a rattling sound. If that happens, bass is no directional so you can put it almost anywhere in room, preferably a corner.

Numbers right. It's just a discon model. I'm leaning towards just getting the sound bar and wireless sub. Actually the one kendrick posted. I can get a refurb for 120 bucks.

Here is thread on the samsung model he posted, but keep on mind that is 2.1 so no center or rear channels like you wanted.

Ok so it looks crooked in the picture but I don't think it is. Anyway the plan would be to attach the mount brackets of the soundbar to the top of the "shelf" so it would sit right below the tv and above the 360. Ill add a blu ray player in the bottom slot since the genie is so small. Anyone have any thoughts? Picture won't work Nevermind

  • 1 month later...

Welp, just cancelled the Uverse TV and Internet package I signed up for...right on the 30th day before any cancellation fees apply.

A couple of reasons for cancelling. First, after two weeks of service the picture started to become distorted every time I turned on the TV. It would stay distorted anywhere from five to fifteen minutes, then it would clear up and be fine. I went back and forth with their customer service, they sent me a new DVR box and that didn't solve the problem.  Finally I spoke with a technician and he explained the problem stems from my TV. He said he actually has the same problem with his brand new TV.

So that was the deciding factor, as well as the crazy good offer from the fine folks of the TWC customer retention services.  When I first called TWC 30 days ago to cancel, they offered me over 200 HD channels, DVR and three months of HBO/Cinemax/Showtime plus internet for around $80 per month. I told them "NO" for the simple reason that I had been playing about $66 per month for only 12 channels and internet. I felt like it was fugged up on principle to let me pay $66 when for $14 more I could have pretty much everything.

Well I called TWC back today, got to the customer retention department and explained the previous offer I had and they hooked me up.

Going to have internet w/ 30mbps, all the HD channels and DVR for $77 per month for 12 months.

Moral of the story: always speak to the customer retention department when you need a new cable/internet deal.

You were right on the money.  I thought I was looking at ~$90 after taxes and fees. It turned out to be just over $100.

And that distortion you described sounds exactly like the problem I was having. The good news is the customer service rep with ATT made it very easy to cancel the services.

TWC, Charter, Comcast, etc is 100x better than U-Verse. Especially the Internet.

99% of TWC complaints arise from people who have poorly connected cable because the technician who hooked up their service was too lazy to do his job. As long as you get a good tech who takes the time to make sure all the signals, compression fittings, grounds, splitters, etc are correctly installed you won't have any problems whatsoever.

My advice would be to call TWC & request a contractor over an in-house technician for your installation. Might sound like the exact opposite of who you'd think you want, but it's not the case. In-house technicians who work directly for TWC are paid hourly & work M-F 8-5. While there are some who do good work, most of them are lazy & do sloppy work. Contractors, on the other hand, are paid piece rate. They get paid by the job. And the majority of them do good work, because if they don't they lose their job.

For the record, I work for DirecTV. While satellite has a slightly better picture quality than cable at a better price, the Internet offered by satellite or AT&T cannot touch HSI from a cable provider. Then once you look at bundle pricing, going with cable TV & internet is simply the best deal.

Are you the guy who hooked my directv into my neighbors dish because you were too lazy to get a good signal? I hope not. Fyi that was a contract guy.

Add to that, Uverse is like $50 a month cheaper.

My TV is 4k projection so it wasn't huge money. I decided to build my den like a home theater when I built my house as opposed to making a separate room. Great for video games.

Only an idiot would throw away 5-10 grand on a 4k TV.

Cable, satellite, video games, streams, BluRay, DVD, etc is only broadcast in 1080 or 720. There is literally nothing available that is 4k definition. The only thing you can look at in 4k right now is pictures taken from a $5,000-$10,000 4k camera. That's it. That's why the only thing they display in Best Buy & other stores on those things are photos snapped from a 4k lens. Otherwise it would be fraudulent advertisement.

And 4k isn't coming anytime soon to cable or satellite. Providers aren't gonna spend millions to make that change when 99% of their customers have 1080 tvs.

Enjoy seeing a 1080 resolution picture on your $10,000 4k screen. Retard.

Add....

And even if you were watching something in true 4k you wouldn't notice the difference in that room. The screen is too small, mounted too high, & placed too far away from seating. It would have to be a larger screen, & placed at eye level within 6ft or so of the viewer for the human eye to see the difference

Damn I think they might be lying to you about needing 20mpbs. Everything I've found online says 6mbps is more than enough to stream movies and play games online.

As far as channels go, I really just want NFL Network, Redzone and the ESPN channels for games. Plus the DVR.

I already have all the apps like HBO GO, Showtime Anytime, Netflix etc.

Told By who? your providor who wants you to keep paying big? i have 10 mbps with like ten devices feeding off it and online gameplay/ streaming is flawless

Edit. Fug i quoted the wrong guy. I meant to quote the 20 mbps guy

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
