He should have been playing division 1 all along. He wasn't because he wasn't good enough.

 

Have you ever heard of a little college called Mississippi Valley State?  That happens to be in the same division of college football as Wofford (1-AA).

 

Should I read you the story of the Ugly Duckling?  Just because Bersin wasn't a good enough highschool player to be offered a free ride at a big program means absolutely nothing in regards to how good he could become during and after college.

 

I certainly don't know Bersin's life story, but it's entirely possible he was recruited to some extent.  Maybe he couldn't afford to move away, maybe he wanted to be with his friends and family, maybe he really wanted an education at Wofford and maybe at the time, he wasn't really set on wanting to become a pro-football player.

 

By your logic Victor Cruz should have never gotten an opportunity to see the field.

But teams look in the 1st round for their franchise receivers. They don't look in the practice squad.

 

 

Do you have any idea how many stud receivers have been drafted outside the first round (or not drafted at all)?  It's an astounding list.

I agree, at the start of the season anyway.  By next season or even sooner, #2 is possible.  To be totally racist and unfair to both players, I see him possibly developing into a WR in the Jordy Nelson mold.  I know that it is premature to say that, and that Bersin is a half-step slower, but if anyone knows how to get the most out of what you have, it is Ricky Proehl.

Bersin has definitely been the second best receiver during pre season. I havent really seen anything out of Cotchery even tho i know he will be a reliable vet.

 

That's just the preseason from "Good Ole Vets".

 

You know how that is. We want them to play. But honestly, many of them don't give their best effort till the lights come on.

 

Unless he's immediately/mysteriously lost something, Cotchery will be their for the Panthers when it counts.

This thread has probably been posted on other NFC South boards by now. It's just that sad.

 

 

Not only does it speak to the state of our receivers but it also says a lot about our fan's ability to be rational. Stop using ridiculous anecdotal evidence that good players have come from nowhere. Look at the statistical odds. "OMG Gettleman found Cruz ERGO BERSIN = CRUZ. 

 

It's the same every year.

 

"____Insert unproven WR__ has all the physical tools needed and I know it. All he needs is a chance because I said so"

 

Meanwhile Byron Bell has taken his lumps, actually played in an NFL game and has earned the LT position by playing well all camp and against very good starting defensive lines. Most people are worried about Bell being our LT but we have people hoping Bersin becomes our #2?

Lets see if he can actually make any catches in a real NFL game before we hand him the spot over two guys with 18 years of NFL experience. Geez people. If he can come in and make some catches as the occasional 3/4 this year, then maybe next year he gets a chance to compete for the two.  Right now the two guys ahead of him have 800 more NFL catches than he does.

There's a tendency to think that veteran WR's that a cap stressed team can pick up are also washed up, so a lot of fans end up turning to the 'undiscovered' young guys that are hopefully just unpolished gems waiting for the right chance to shine. Here are highlights from last season on our "mediocre" (as someone in this thread called 'em) new guys. Both did a great job of getting open and catching the ball (some one handed grabs too) in some obvious short yardage situations, with a dozen TD's between 'em. I think they're both a good fit for a team with an iffy OL and a QB who can buy time with his feet and try and find an open receiver. We lost some speed at the WR position vs. last season, but I say hands down we've got a group with better hands and more reach. I've got my fingers crossed for young guys like Bersin and Brown, but I think our new old guys have a lot of catches left in 'em.
