Jake Delhomme on the Mac Attack - Panthers have more than enough weapons for Cam

People that have been around long enough know I was a critic of Jake's play. One thing I never questioned was his professionalism. Every day at camp, Jake was one of the first to the field, leading the guys to the next round of drills, no matter what. He never took for granted that he was a starting QB on a NFL team, mainly because he knew what it was like to fail. In some ways I think that really benefits a player later in his career.

Does Cam do some of those same things at camp or no? Referring mostly to being first on the field, etc.

One thing I have surmised from what I've seen and read, is that Cam does often stay after and put in extra work.

He does, at times.

The last piece of the Cam puzzle is consistency.

I can tell you that one day at camp it was painfully obvious that Cam didn't have a good night, to the point of being called out by Ryan Kalil. Cam wasn't calling out plays during warmups and was moping around, so Kalil called him out on it. I understand it, I have had bad nights where I haven't wanted to go to work. It sucks sometimes. But as you get older and more experienced in your profession, you learn to put things aside and realize every day, every moment on the practice field counts. Its time to work.

Cam will get there, I have no doubt.

Factors in too that Delhomme was 28 and had been in the NFL for a while when he took over in Carolina.  Newton's having to grow into the role.

I'd worry if I didn't see him doing that, but happily, I do.

Absolutely. Age is a huge factor. Can you imagine being an early 20 something in charge of leading a NFL franchise? Nearly impossible.

Jake needs to stay in his lane as far as I'm concerned.  Moose, Smitty, Proehl (not to mention Mangum)! Gimme a break!

I am sick and tired of that theme. I appreciate that we were able to bring in some guys with solid hands at wide receiver, but other than our number one draft pick, we have who we have at receiver because of the horrible cap predicament that is Hurney's legacy.  Our top receivers are arguably possession guys who are not necessarily going to stretch the field or be legitimate threats to take it to the house every time they touch the ball.  Yeah, that's all we need in this offense blah blah blah. Bullshit! Give Cam another legitimate weapon that will pressure opposing defenses on every single down.  It will not only free Cam, but free all the offensive skill players.

I think Jake's opinion is valid here, even if he leans toward being a Homer. At this point the proof is going to be in the pudding as to how productive we will be with what we have.

I'm of the opinion that we have a net upgrade for WR1-WR3, but it is speculation. I also think we have upgraded the TE crew, and with a healthy JStew the RB situation has improved. To me, that means we have an upgraded crew of playmakers.

I can admit we are lacking a speedburning dynamic breakaway player, but that is a premium level player. Not as simple as go buy one, especially with our money situation. We will see what real impact Benjamin has, I'm pretty optimistic.
