Well, everyone has an opinion.  The bottom line for me is that if we don't find a running game that was more proficient than last year's effort then we may get to the playoffs, but we'll likely be basically stuffed out like we were last season by a team with a flat out tougher running back. Moreover, it's no wonder why the Seahawks were able to get to the Super Bowl, being that they have arguably the toughest back in the league.

Listen, before this debate goes on for far too long (and because I like you) I'm going to be completely candid. There is not one thing anybody can say to me that will change my mind about the Stewart situation. Everything I'd said about the contract being a waste of money has been reaffirmed by Stewart's 2 year vacation, Hurney's firing for borking the cap, and the fact that we have like 2 other starting running backs already, which is 2 more than some playoff teams last year. At this point it would take Stewart running for 100+ yards and four touchdowns in the Superbowl, adding in one receiving touchdown at the last minute for the GWD to get me to renounce everything I'd said about Stewart. And Stewart's nothing compared to Marshawn Lynch. It's a fantasy to think he's anywhere near that. He's about 4 1,000+ yard seasons behind for starters.

I get your overall point, but Denver comparison to us is really an apples and oranges comparison.  They are built a little differently, and are able to rely on Manning's precision-based air attack if all else fails.  Now, perhaps our air attack will move more towards that direction this year, but if last night's game is any indication we have a ways to go.  Cam's scrambling ability has masked our need for a more consistent and tougher running attack.  Hopefully Stewart can provide us the edge that we've missed for the last couple of seasons.

My comparison to denver wasn't so much about positions and philosophy but more about who is a critical player to be on the field and who isn't. If I had said DeMarcus Ware and compared that to Stewart I'd be making the same exact point. I'd just read an article on Montee Ball on rotoworld earlier today so when I was trying to find an example he happened to be on the top of my head.

BTW, there was no fluff in Rivera's sentiment, just the cold, honest truth.

Like this cold, honest truth?

Coach Ron Rivera calls WR Armanti Edwards the Panthers' "training camp MVP."

Coach Ron Rivera says Armanti Edwards has been the "most improved" receiver after OTAs and minicamp.

"Probably the guy who’s really improved the most during these OTAs and minicamp has been Armanti," Rivera said. "He made a couple really nice plays. His development has been really key for us as well." Edwards will have to keep it up during training camp and preseason, but it sounds like he'll keep his job.

http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/nfl/5889/armanti-edwards

or this?

Panthers coach Ron Rivera believes Jimmy Clausen will get another chance to start in the NFL.

Barring injury to Cam Newton, it won't happen in Carolina, of course. "The kid’s got a good arm, he’s an accurate passer, he’s learned a lot, and I think if he continues to grow this season he’s going to get his opportunity," Rivera said. Clausen had one of the worst rookie seasons of all time, and shouldn't generate interest as a starter when his rookie deal runs out in 2014.

or all of this?

2 short years later, and there's no James Anderson, Sione Fua, or McClain on the team. Norman is still a headcase, Munnerlyn is with the Vikings. It's Ron's job to encourage, and maybe that means emphasizing players' strengths, and maybe exaggerating their ability to restore confidence. He's not going to go to the media and say "well i think that Godfrey guy plays like poo". Yes, there's a little bit of honesty in there, but it's not the real truth he's talking. It's not his job to enlighten us with truths, it's his job to make this team better, and that means encouragement is more important than cold, honest, truth. Because smart money is that if you got him in a position to confide in you, he'd probably say he really would've loved it if Stewart would've been healthy the past two years or had someone getting paid that money who was on the field batting Drew Brees' passes down in the fourth quarter.

He doesn't need to split with all those guys to stay fresh

Cam, Tolbert, Stewart, Williams? Split with everyone and that is like 7-9 rushes per person. Your best RB doesn't need 7 rushes....he needs more IMO

our "best running back" can't handled the load of a full time rb so yes 15 carries a game for him is more then enough added his involvement in the passing game we don't sacrifice Tolbert and Williams carries for stew unless it's a stout running d were facing cams runs don't need to be designed so that doesn't necessarily take away from the rbs carries

Stew's that one girl that you were done with, completely over. Can't even remember her name. Jonathan who? Mike Tolbert, guys! Tolboat. Toldozer. Remember when he trucked that niner?! RB's are so yesterday, dime a dozone in the draft. Passing league, guys, remember? Barner will develop!

Then the phone rings just long enough to see "J-Stew," and man does your heart flutter.

Best rushers on this team are Cam, Stewart and Tolbert if the roster is healthy. Don't need an event split with 34 if those 3 if all are healthy. Again, that means the most any would get would be around 7.....which is too few for 28 if healthy

Not trying to take SCP's comments out of context, but I need to see more.  He is getting paid about $25k per yard since signing his new deal.

Give a lot of credit to Silatolu for dominating in the run game.  He was awesome all night.

Yes. I watched the game last night and on Stew's second run Silatolu demolished his guy

yeah....im done i don't have time for the blatant d will hate your showing, your delusional if you think tolbert is a better rb then d will and please explain how cam is a better rusher, how did you come up with that please tell? and then your still living in ''if'' land, why give Stewart all the carries if it's a chance the same thing happens as last year,it would be better to go with what work the two healthy seasons he has in the nfl, which was splitting carries

Stating reality isn't blatant hate.

Are you going to claim in our rush scheme and OL...Cam, Tolbert and Stewart aren't better ove rush threats? Than the 31 year old version of Williams?

Cam is the best rushing threat, even though not traditional on the team....that isn't an arguement.

If you want to talk about traditional rush threats...Tolbert has been better. Again u have to factor in our scheme, offensive plan, OL, and production. Power runners fit. The DWill apologist live in the past.

As for 28....again, simply watch the two run. 28 is made for this offense and 34 isn't (and is at the near end of career ). Day and night....saw that Sunday.
