Why can't Godfrey go back to Safety?

a few reasons: 

 

it's preseason and they want to get some competition out of the other corners, especially Bene

 

it's preseason and they want to see what Godfrey can do playing corner, with the reality of him being more a third safety in a sub package that should be stronger against run plays in passing personnel

 

he has played safety for 5+ seasons, he can easily be moved there if need be

Now all of a sudden Godfrey is a good option? Yeah he can lay the wood every now and then, but his whole career he has been terrible at coverage. You know, the main job for a safety? Now he's even worse after injury.

Do you?  It's called a safety for a reason.  The last line of defense, make sure no one gets behind you.  There are very few playmakers at the safety position in the league.  Of course they do take man duties but for the most part it is to keep themselves between the ball and the end zone.

But none of those things matter!  Just look at his stats! :unsure:

 

 

Its hilarious people say there is no correlation between Godfrey being IR'd after week 2, because our defense did get better after he left.  Its just like Josh Norman.  There is no place for a safety or corner who cannot be disciplined, or smart enough to play their assignment.  Godfrey gave up three touchdowns in two weeks and the last one he blew his achilles trying to recover because he was out of position.  Then our defense locked it down because Gettleman brought MIkell in and Mitchell started the rest of the year.  I argued this exact scenario with a guy last week.  Godfrey must go.  We need to continue to get rid of these mediocre players.

Who gets to say if the player was horrible or not?  Mike Mitchell was considered a bum before last year.   Also, Melvin White was once considered unworthy of being drafted.

can you name one player on that defense?

He took a no name, UFDA secondary last season along with Mitchell and made them look good in his system. He has a knack for making more with less, if you can't see that then you're a noob

If Roman can't go, I would rather bring back Mikell. He wasn't bad last year and I think he could do at least as well as Roman or Godfrey could do.

Damn that's a shame. I thought he filled in very well last year. There was a huge drop off between him and Lester when he got hurt in the 9ers game.

Imagine if Decoud gets hurt too, will be a shitshow.  I cant tell if Russel is going to be decent or not, I know he got beat on the man coverage pass from Bowe in the slot but he appears to be the #2 SS.  Again, safety on our team is just dont let anything get behind you.  We've never had a ballhawk or anything for what I can remember.

You know what? I agree. There's no way anyone who didn't look like a king in another system is going to look any better just because he's playing behind our front seven.

Mike Mitchell is absolutely gonna suck for us. Heck, why did we sign some castoff from the Raiders anyway? :unsure:

Let's see Mitchell was a guy who barley got run with the Raiders (plus he was still young and very fast).

Roman haa been a starter for years with a proven record of suckage. Not to mention older slower and now has a bad wheel.

But you still haven't told me one player that he took that was horrible and did something with them. All them guys, even the UDFA > Harper and not to mention they're younger too

the only thing that will keep Godfrey on the team is his contract. Went to camp and he looked bad and slow.

Watched both preseason games and he was beaten. His time is up and someone will take his place.

Clearly didn't look at Rivera presser post game vs the hawks.....he clearly stated Thomas got beat and that wasn't Godfrey's assignment but please continue,also and this defense got better when he got injured is pure unadulterated speculation, mikel came in and did a decent job but there were numerous times he was out of position, and he created one turnover throughout the entire season if the coaching staff wanted probowlers at the safety position they would have resigned Mitchell or spent a mid round pick on one
