Anybody else here into the stock market?

In the past five years I've really started to throw my energy into stocks and such.  I'm far from an expert but was lucky to get in early on stocks like Tesla and SolarCity.  Also keeping my eye on Corning (GLW).  A lot of associates of mine are starting to look into irrigation companies as well because of marijuana legalization.  I think it's a pretty exciting time.  Any recommendations or stocks you guys love?

I've doubled my money just on Royal Dutch Shell PLC ADR A since I got it a beginning of 2009. My broker at Edward Jones pushed me into it so I bought in pretty big and have done great. I have a few funds and other energy stocks, but the natural gas stocks have done great, Royal Dutch Shell all so pays a dividend that I have set up to reinvest,

I play around a bit with it.  Actually made some money back in 04/05 buying some very cheap stocks (so cheap they were low risk) and by 2008 before the big drop, had built my play fund to around $10 grand.   I could kick myself though for one thing I thought about doing, but didn't.  I was tempted to dump it all into Wells Fargo stock when it dropped to about 8 a share in 09.  Decided to play it safe.  Now the stock is up around $50 a share dammit.

Nobody likes to hear it but you are generally dumb trying to make money on individual stocks...unless

1) It is part of a balanced portfolio

or

B) You have an edge whether it be insider information or you simply can research the hell out of something.

People who are making money consistently on stocks are

a) Warren Buffet

ii) Traders who make money off micro trading

3) People who understand things like alpha/beta separation

Four) Insiders

The best way to make money is to learn what a truly balanced portfolio is.

The only places I have had (what I think is) an edge is in Oil and regional banks. The former because I made it a hobby to research and the latter because I have an insider giving me advice.

Good stuff. But price has nothing to do with risk.

True, its more the amount of money spent than the price per share, at least irt what I was doing at the time. But it was cool to say that I own a 1000 shares of a particular stock even if I only paid 50 cents a share.

It's time IN, not timING.

I've thought about it but just don't have the spare cash to do so.  I'd love to be able to take a couple grand, put it in 5 stocks I feel good about and just play with it.

Maybe one day I'll man up and take a check from some of my independent contract work and start on that. Until then I'll just have to let my 403b do all the work.
