While Kelvin Benjamin has been anointed a "legitimate No. 1" after 1 preseason catch...

Watch the replay. I don't think it was intended for him.

Also LaFell's problem isn't what he catches, its what he doesnt catch.

Lafell's problem isnt just what he drops, it's his inability to consistently beat even the most turdy of defensive backs.

Newton made him look better than he was and a number of reports out of new england have suggested such.

not to mention his current position on their depth chart.

Here are Smitty, LaFell, and Ginn's numbers from last year:

745 yds, 4 TD

627 yds, 5 TD

556 yds, 5 TD

Can Benjamin, Cotchery, and Avant match that? I say yes. And that ignores the younger guys who could also surprise. Don't get me wrong, I think Smitty should have been here until he retired. But he's not, and I'm not worried about our receivers relative to last years group...both groups would be considered at or near the bottom of the league.

What I find interesting is that everyone is saying how bad the Panthers offense was in 2013.  However, this team went 12-4 and won the NFC South.  The point is when you have a strong/dominating defense, you don't have to have overpowering offense to win in the NFL.  Having a great offense may make the game more fun to watch, but the Panthers won 12 games last year with an 'anemic offense'.

Between Smith, LaFell and Ginn there was only one 100 yard game and 1 game with multiple TDs. None of the 3 caught more than 6 passes in a game. The leading receiver from last year is still on the roster.

That is because we didn't pass the ball. We were bottom three in pass attempts per game yet top 4 in incompletions per game.

KB doesn't have to be very, very, very good for our WR core to be better. They were never that great. Shoot, our leading receiver wasnt even a WR! It isnt all about one guy in Carolina. We have some reliable vets and receiving TEs. Benjamin just needs to be servicable and call for some added attention. Just his presence can open up doors for other guys.

This year especially, his success may not be hugely reliant on statistics. It will also be because of his blocking and him pulling defensive players his way. He doesnt HAVE to be Megatron/AJ Green. Although i wouldnt be mad or even surprised if he contributes more than expected. Hopefully he goes off.
