While Kelvin Benjamin has been anointed a "legitimate No. 1" after 1 preseason catch...

It appears that Steve Smith might still be able to play...

And it doesn't appear that Brandon Lafail is doing too badly either.

Ted Ginn has battled injuries in Phoenix, but everyone knows what you are getting with him--- a pure speed guy---a burner with limitations, but a legit deep threat who can stretch the defense.

Benjamin is going to have to be very, very, very productive as a rookie in order for the new group of wideouts to be better than last years group of solid, if unspectacular players.

It might be sobering to remember that only 7 rookie receivers in the last 20 years have gone for more than 1000 yards in their first NFL campaign. And none of them are in Benjamin's mold as a player.

Everyone knows what they're getting with Steve Smith and Brandon Lafell too.

Don't fool yourself.

Smitty single handily cost us the Cards game last year, his endzone drops changed the entire momentum of that game, btw, is it just me but does Cam just seem more happy and chill since Smitty left?

yeah since we're on the topic anyone else remember lafell's awesome drop that hit him in the numbers on 4th down inside the cardinals' 15 yard line

gonna miss that so much ;(

Anybody else remember SS#89 joining in on the "Two claps and a Ric Flair" chant last year any of the half dozen times it was filmed and made public?

Anybody else remember SS#89 hanging around his QB during every minute (or any minute for that matter) of training camp trying to get on the same page so that they would both flourish, year 1, 2 or 3 of Cam's career?

Anybody else remember SS#89 mentoring a single soul on his beloved team so that the chances of this franchise to succeed as a whole went up?

Anybody else remember SS#89 listening to people in positions of authority in this organization and actually doing even the simplest of tasks like not being the only person out of 90 at Wofford that refused to participate in team stretching?

Anybody else think that Thomas Davis is going to take SS#89's lunch money and lay his ass out cold?

I sure as hell hope he does.  Steve was a lot of things, but he was never a good teammate and he needs to STFU.

When it's over Steve, you can come home.  Until then, better bring your lunch, it's gonna be a loooooooong day.

Gators fan???

LOL...actually, I am a 'Noles fan.

I like Benjamin He has a lot of upside and could be a really, really solid wideout...maybe even great with time...but it's going to take time for him to evolve into anything near an elite receiver, IMHO. He tends to get a little lazy in his routes as well.

I have to laugh at people talking about Smitty and LaFell's drops, though.

These people must have never seen KB play in a real game.

The guy drops a LOT of balls.

I believe, statistically, he dropped nearly 10 percent of the catchable passes thrown his way last year.

Of course his size allows him to grab some balls others would like miss.

We will see. It is just very unusual for a rookie receiver to come in and put up really big numbers in their first year.

Hard to see big time improvement from this receiving group, add the uncertainty on the offensive line and Carolina might be in for another long year offensively.

There is one wonderful thing about the NFL, though.

History has proven If your defense is good enough...you can win the Super Bowl.

Even with a lackluster offense.

The catch alone wasn’t what made Brady happy. LaFell said earlier in training camp they ran the same play against their own defense and he fell at the top end of the route. Brady told him to keep his feet underneath him and make a play, which is what he did Wednesday.

So a 5th-year vet who still struggles to run routes is going to be better than Benjamin, let alone Cotchery and Avant who've been far better and more reliable as WR than LaFell has for his entire career.
