Whomever loses the left tackle battle...

Dave sat on his hands at the start of free agency and all the good tackles got signed. I blame this situation solely on him. Bell should not be a starting LT for any NFL team let alone us. The situation looks pathetic.

This is shortsighted, Dave even came out and said after free agency that they didnt have enough money for any of those tackles. What could he have done?

LT and RT are definitely different skill sets.

I could see Chandler as an LT (skill set, anyway; ability is another issue) but Bell has always looked like a guard to me.

the days of the LT being a pass blocker and the RT a run blocker are more or less over, and the ones where "the good one" is at LT versus RT, in my mind anyway.

Can agree it's less specialized than in the past, but I still think it applies.

Does your thinking on this apply to all schemes?

I wonder why such a big risk is being taken with our tackle positions. Is there something there with Chandler or Bell that no one has seen or can see except Gettle/RR? I just dont understand not bringing in anyone and leaving it to uknowns. Bell has been average at very best, and Chandler has zero experience. I jsut don't understand it.

to a point. Less to scheme and more to application, possibly, but if you're a deep ball team with one good tackle, you're still having to borrow some help.  If you're running the ball 500 times a year down someone's throat and your guy is athletic for miles but is awful in the run game, you're adjusting pretty heavily.

Those are huge generalizations, and speaks more to the idea of "do we go get one great tackle", but sure, I want both guys to fit if possible, and it not be just a thing of "LT is better".  Even with the idea that the team seems to be generating that ideal.

I'm not against your overall point, that upgrading OT if possible - likely at this point to be depth - isn't a bad idea. Chandler and Williams, at least with one game sample, generated positive PFF ratings for pass blocking against a pretty solid rush unit that generated a similar number of sacks.  They both were awful against the run ( though again Buffalo is a somewhat strong and deep DL).

But that doesn't mean I want that pair at LT and Bell at RT by default.

All of my hopes for our offense are pinned on the Tight Ends and interior line getting the job  done in the running game. If our guards are healthy we can pull them in combination with the tight ends and create running lanes via scheme. When Silatolu went down our running game dried up because Travelle couldn't pull with enough speed. Swole bones has impressed me with the vigor he run blocks with. He is at a significant experience and technique disadvantage matching up with linebackers and edge rushers.

Also if our guards can get the job done in pass pro Cam can take off under duress. Chandler really really struggled with stunts and blitz pickup at guard. Guys were getting a unimpeded path to the QB at times. If Cam has time to see the pressure, he's good enough to avoid it.

Just look at our salary cap situation for next year.  Simply put the front office didn't feel like there were any players available that were substantially better at a price that we were willing or able to pay.

I doubt our GM is just ignoring the o-line.  I wouldn't be surprised at all if we add someone after roster cuts.

If Gettleman has shown anything it is the fact he isn't afraid to look everywhere for talent.  Unfortunately we are in a position, because of past decisions and future obligations (Cam, Luke, Star), that we have to look for cheap talent.
