School me on Charles Godfrey and defense

To be a nickel you gotta be able to cover. That's all it is; the ability to cover all 9 routes especially the underneath routes. Godfrey has never been able to cover (Jimmy Graham :0) his whole entire career.

It made the answer a lot easier to move him back to safety due to the pathetic plays from Russell and Lester in the PS. Don't expect much from the move too. Godfrey will still be himself; average safety. If Harper can get HEALTHY, he's clearly our best option at SS.

Do you know how horrible it is that Harper might be our best option at SS.

They tried Godfrey at CB to see if he could make the team, but Bene truly beat him out at the position.  He now has to beat Harper to win a spot onthe team.

If it wasn't for his contract and being a vet on the team he would now be cut.  Its hard for an older vet with an injury to come back to NFL ready. Thomas Davis is the exception.

Not really. I'm really confused seeing these posts stating that Bene beat Godfrey for the nickel job. I'm all for Bene at the nickel job tho.

But, Godfrey moving back to safety had more to do with the lack of plays from Russell and Lester + injuries of Boston/Harper.

Godfrey has always been a reliable tackler, but has struggled in coverage.  Then again, he has never operated behind a great front 7.  I would have liked to see him at safety behind our defensive front.

One thing is for sure...Decoud and Lester have looked terrible this preseason.  Lester has struggled against the pass and run and looks lost.  There should be better options for his spot available after the final round of cuts.

For me, the lack of speed is killing our secondary.  White, Bene and DeCoud are the ones who I think shine given our front-7.  Cason has been wildy inconsistent his whole career to say the least and we've experienced Harper's shenanigans over the years.

With Godfrey, he had that awesome out of nowhere game against the Cardinals a some years back and has never lived up to it.  I've never really been a fan and think he'll be off the team in due time.  I really think if we target any cut, it's going to be on the OL or in the secondary.

That being said, I think we still have a top-7 defense on our hands.

Tackling is one of Godfrey's biggest weaknesses

I'm neutral towards Godfrey because of the hard-to-predict variable of his achilles injury.  It is funny though, watching the forums gradual turn against Godfrey over the past year.   Seems like not that long ago he was our consensus best secondary player.....now he can't cover the covers on his bed.

The Godfrey contract rarely gets brought up among Hurney's blunders, but IMO it may have been the most head scratching contract he gave out.  At least all the other guys he paid could actually play.  Kalil is arguably the best center in the league, he may have overpaid CJ but CJ is definitely an elite DE, DeAngelo was coming off of a 1500 yard year and Stewart was arguably a better back than DeAngelo when Hurney resigned him, Beason and TD were both elite LBs who caught the injury bug hard.  In short, while some of the contracts look awful in hindsight, all of them save for not choosing one or the other between DeAngelo and J. Stew, all of them were understandable at the time.

Godfrey?  No.  IMO, Godfrey was always an average starting safety at best.  Yeah, he made some big splash plays that the fans loved, but for every one of those, he was good for blowing at least 2-3 other plays.  Yet, Hurney paid the guy like he was Ed Reed.
