School me on Charles Godfrey and defense

I'd say they evaluated his performance and found it lacking. They offered him the chance to contribute where (and when) they thought he'd be best suited, taking the $ numbers into consideration. After the season they'll rate his performance and cost numbers like they do with everyone else, and go from there. I hope he does well but at this point I think he's hanging on by his fingertips.

“He had success as a corner in college, and when we first got him we felt he had some nickel ability,” Panthers fourth-year coach Ron Rivera said. “So looking at that and looking at what our needs were, we felt this was the best opportunity for him to get a chance to play for us.”

Translation: Godfrey wasn't great before the surgery, and now after surgery asking him to cover half of the football field as a safety is not realistic. He can cover a smaller amount at nickel, a spot he may be able to compete for.

Sometimes the answer is already on the internet.

I need help on this one.

So Godfrey comes back from injury, and the consensus right away is that the Panthers would like to keep him, but he'd need to transition to Nickel CB. Can someone tell me why?

Does it have to do with his injury? I realize that CB and Safety have different roles. Do safeties do too much pushing and run tackling for someone with an achilles injury?

Does it have to do with depth? More room at corner? If that were the case, I would have expected to see him playing safety, at least a little, with all of Harper's missed time.

Someone please educate me.

Actually Godfrey was playing Safety during the Goal Line stance. Alot of teams are leaning more towards the Big Nickel.

They flirted with the idea of Godfrey moving to nickel in 2011.

Note the date on this article.

One of rivera's first moves.

In a move that many fans will see as unusual, the Panthers have elected not to sign any free agent CB's to replace the departed Richard Marshall. It's not because there weren't any CB's available, as the oft-discussed Joselio Hanson was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week, but it's because none of the CB's available provide enough of what the coaching staff are looking for to justify giving away a roster spot.

The reason why the Panthers aren't going to sign anyone is because quite frankly, the players that are available are all too similar to current Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn. So, rather than have two Captain Munnerlyns on the roster, the Panthers have elected to go with a musical chairs version of DB's when the defense is in the nickel package.

According to an article by Steve Reed, Charles Godfrey will move to nickel back,Jordan Pugh will move to FS, and Sherrod Martin will move to SS any time the Panthers elect to go with the nickel package on defense.

I don't think it would be hard for Harper to be better than Godfrey. Godfrey at his best was borderline terrible.

I whole heartedly agree.  I was watching highlights of the Seahawks and Bills games.  Godfrey was always coming up short.  That is the mediocrity that fans are used to and are scared to hope for better.  Decoud and Harper were former pro bowl safeties.  Godfrey couldn't make the pro bowl on Madden.

Just a question Jeremy.

When has Harper been able to cover 1/4 of the field let alone half??

When has Harper been able to cover anything close to athletic?

To be a nickel you gotta be able to cover. That's all it is; the ability to cover all 9 routes especially the underneath routes. Godfrey has never been able to cover (Jimmy Graham :0) his whole entire career.

It made the answer a lot easier to move him back to safety due to the pathetic plays from Russell and Lester in the PS. Don't expect much from the move too. Godfrey will still be himself; average safety. If Harper can get HEALTHY, he's clearly our best option at SS.

I believe RR values the flexibility w/ Godfrey..........plays nickel and fills in @ safety.

in fact I know he does ...............as long as it cost way more to cut him than it does to keep him

This is the worst case scenario right now for us.

My hope was in Lester or Tre Boston lining up beside Decoud.

Godfrey being a backup.

And Harper being either cut or moved to LB.

Now we are having to depend on this suck ass in our secondary? ?

Dam.
