I look at it as sad news.

When you hear stories of any tragedy (child murdered, natural disaster kills dozens, huge plane crash, etc) it makes you sad in a 'general humanity' sort of way, even though no one you actually knew or loved was involved.

With celebrities, it has that added dimension of familiarity.  No, you didn't know them, but you were familiar with them, so it's sad news, especially so if they seemed like a nice person aside from the fame.

And yes, if they've done something that moved you, it feels a little deeper.  I grew up reading Charlie Brown, so I mourned the day Charles Schulz passed.  Ditto Jim Henson.  Probably feel the same when Stan Lee goes because I grew up loving comic books.

This particular case?  No, I didn't cry, but it made my heart heavy.

As a personal rule though, I tend not to take issue with how people grieve.  That's a very personal thing.

agree. it's complicated; RW didn't affect me, but i felt like poo for days after the malaysia airlines plane got shot down

Another reason a celebrity death can really tear people up is that sometimes people get really wrapped up in/connected to a show, series, movie, etc... & they forget that the person is just an actor. One of my professors came up through the biz with Esther Rolle (Florida on Good Times) & said that she was walking to a restaurant with her & within 4 blocks, 6-7 people had approched her saying they were so sorry about James (her husband on the show) dying. This was 5 years after the last episode.

When my prof asked why she didn't correct them, Esther said she used to try but it was pointless. The sentiment was coming from a good place & explaining that John Amos (the actor who played James) was alive & well just took too long.

this is the hardest heart i've felt for any celeb passing on.  im old enough to appreciate what he did and how well did it, we are so damn lucky to have had the chance to experience his gift.  a magical man with a genius talent.

i tried to make a list of favorite bits but i cant, they all mean so much to me.  his movies, stand-up and improv will always have a home in my heart and soul.

I am just going to say this, and I don't know if it is wrong or not, but Parkinson disease is the one thing that would make me contemplate suicide.

It is a cruel disease, and I could not deal with my mind being fine but my body shutting down like that.

Again, I don't know if that is bad to say, but it is the truth.

The Parkinson's diagnosis probably sent him over the edge. It's heart wrenching but we can never know how much so because it's all individual. His state of mind prior to being diagnosed I'm sure had a great deal to do with it. His coping mechanisms were obviously not the best, and many of us can probably relate. Sometimes, no matter how strong you try to be, for your family, for yourself, you just can't make it work. You spend your days smiling for others while you're screaming on the inside.
