RIP Robin Williams

without any disrespect towards RW, the issues he dealt with, or anyone mourning him, it's a foreign experience to me to be personally emotionally affected by the death of a celebrity. i've never understood it.

i am abstractly sad, but that's all -- the posts on here and on social media about being distraught, in tears, sitting stunned, etc. don't really connect with me.

I can agree with this stance. It's a drag when such a great guy in the entertainment industry (a world that has its fair share of jackasses) decides he can't live his life anymore, but then again, it's impossible for me to mourn someone's death whom I didn't know personally. And the fact that there are so many people who act like they're going above and beyond by posting a one sentence eulogy for him seems disingenuous.

Dave Grohl dies and there WILL be tears.

When I saw this on Twitter last night it stopped me in my tracks.

Was watching John Adams, and paused the movie just to think how this dude touched my life.

I was a bit too old for Mrs. Doubtfire, but I remember my little sister laughing like a crazy person when I would babysit her, and nothing else would make her happy.  Loved him in GMV, and DPS.

Have you ever watched a movie or listened to a song or read a book that deeply impacted your life?

try as i might i cannot think of a single specific example, but yes. it tends to be moments, and they tend it be thematic: redemption and the laying-down of hatred in favor of love is something that always triggers a great welling of emotion from deep inside. in fact to me it's the best thing about the mythos associated with christianity; redemption and forgiveness are beautiful and transcendent things.

maybe that's the key, beauty. humanity it it's finest is to me an unparalleled form of beauty and it has the power to bring me to tears.

I look at it as sad news.

When you hear stories of any tragedy (child murdered, natural disaster kills dozens, huge plane crash, etc) it makes you sad in a 'general humanity' sort of way, even though no one you actually knew or loved was involved.

With celebrities, it has that added dimension of familiarity.  No, you didn't know them, but you were familiar with them, so it's sad news, especially so if they seemed like a nice person aside from the fame.

And yes, if they've done something that moved you, it feels a little deeper.  I grew up reading Charlie Brown, so I mourned the day Charles Schulz passed.  Ditto Jim Henson.  Probably feel the same when Stan Lee goes because I grew up loving comic books.

This particular case?  No, I didn't cry, but it made my heart heavy.

As a personal rule though, I tend not to take issue with how people grieve.  That's a very personal thing.
