Pre-season Game 1: Winners and Losers

Recommended Posts

Didn't watch the game but it sounds like godfrey picked up where he left off ... smh

Sent from my SPH-L710 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

He struggled on one play (where it was a pick route) but he helped on the 4th down goal line stop. Other than that he was silent.. Him and Bene basically had the same night (besides the pick route)

I think people are unfairly judging Barner, he did good for what he was given. Yes he missed some holes, but he made a special team tackle, and the one time he had some OK blocking he showed he's not only elusive but he can run you over. Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying he had a great game, but come on he wasn't bad either. I definelty am pulling for this guy to make the squad becuase I think he can be a good running back.

And why is Reaves such a hero he had 19 yards on 8 carries that's less than 3 yards a gain. Come on get the F*** out of here. He didn't do that much better than Barner, I like Reaves running hard and all, but don't crown him the savior when he didn't do much more than Barner. And if you want to really compare them they had about the same amount of highlight plays.

I'm saying all this to say if you want to belame somebody look at the offensive lineman who just did a horrendous job run blocking, on the bright side we know how good we can be passing the ball with how well they stood up when it came to pass blocking.

It was covered in a previous post, but Barner was given reps with all of the o-lines. IMO DeAngelo was inactive tonight in part to make this a showcase game for Barner, and unfortunately for Barner, he got upstaged by Reeves.

If you watched the 2011 pre-season vs. Cam's first game, it's obvious the coaches simplify the playbook specifically to put players in certain situations so they can be better evaluated. Barner is a speedy scatback who did his damage at Oregon in the wide open Chip Kelly spread offense that got him the ball on the perimeter one on one with guys in the secondary. Tonight it was clear the coaches wanted to see what type of between-the-tackles runner he could be, and without question he struggled, trying to juke guys at the line instead of using his burst to hit the hole and get to the second level.

It was assumed the Panthers drafted Barner to be the Darren Sproles change-of-pace spark to what was otherwise a boring, methodical and predictable attack and he still might be that guy, but since he's been here, I don't recall him making an impact outside of fitting in seamlessly with Double Trouble off the field. For the most part, we haven't put him in the Darren Sproles role because I don't think Shula's ball-control offense calls for it, and if he doesn't fit what you're trying to do, what good is he?

the run game always takes a while to get started for us. it always has. It will be week 4 before we start churning like that. Until then you still try a run or two to keep d honest. Also you have to wear a D down with running over the game. thats hard to do with 7 different lines on both side of the ball.
