Hypothetical RB scenario

Of course we have D Will and J Stew for now, along with Barner, but I believe that we were trying to groom a replacement in Gaffney. We all know how that worked out. I think that it's a strong possibility that the 49'ers may release Lattimore, from South Carolina Gamecocks. If they do, I think that he'd be a great pickup for us. If they don't release him, I'd be willing to part with a 6 or 7 round pick if they'd go for it. What do you guys think?

While talented, there's no guarantee the dude's knee is ever going to be right. You can't use a spot on your 53 man roster to bring that on imo.

True, we'd definitely need to put him through a series of medical test as well as physical test before signing him, if the situation arose...

Why trade for him if they are going to release him?

If they released him, we could pick him up but we'd only attempt to trade for him if they did not release him and we thought that he was healthy enough to play at a high level...

as much as i love Lattimore and the school he comes from, i think he is a very high risk investment for an unknown amount of production. i would be fine signing him as a training camp body next year if he is available. and if he can stay healthy and shows flash to the coaches, then he should be able to earn a roster spot. but i would not trade even a 7th round pick for him. I'd much rather us pick up an RB in the 2nd or 3rd round and then sign lattimore for the minimum. then in camp next year, let him prove it.

The problem with taking on Latt (and I would love to have a kid with his work ethic if we're being completely honest), is you have to keep him on your active roster for the start of the season, even if you intend to IR him. So lets say his knee isn't right and you claim him. You've gotta cut somebody worthy of a roster spot to keep ML for that first week. It could be Byndom, Brown, Brockel, Lucas whoever...one of those fringe guys who can help you this year will have to be cut in order to keep Marcus long enough to put him on IR.

Trading for him is a horrible idea and will never happen, and it's to late to bring him in because we don't know what he can do physically and there's not enough time left to properly evaluate him.. Overall a very unrealistic ide. Don't let your love for 'lil' Carolina cloud your judgement.

I wouldn't like this at all.. We ALREADY have an unreliable RB core AT BEST with Tolbert being the most consistent and he's naturally a FB.  Stewart's career, for all practical purposes is done.  He will never be healthy and I'm not interested in adding yet another wild card to that position.
