Cam Tries To Clarify Chud Comments

If I was a player in an interview I would go buck wild so the media would REALLY have something to talk about. And then I would say to the world "fug the media".

The trouble with the media is they're basically rubber and you're glue. Anything you say bounces of them and sticks to you.

Maybe my memory is hazy but I remember plenty of articles about the Panthers keeping things simple for Cam because of the Auburn system but mainly because of the holdout and because he was a freakin' rookie.

He's apologizing because the comments were just unfair to Chud, love him or hate him.

Smith said both quarterbacks stand a better chance of succeeding in this year's West Coast offense, run by offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.

"The quarterbacks are doing what has not been done around here in a long time," Smith said. "The philosophy has been in years past is not to screw it up and now it's put your foot down on the gas pedal and go hard."

Newton praised Chudzinski for being "open-minded" when it comes to the playbook.

Chudzinski, who coached under Norv Turner in San Diego and is using many aspects of the Chargers' offense in Carolina, even installed some zone-read-option plays, something Newton excelled at last year at Auburn.

Anyone with common sense knows what he meant. But this obviously goes beyond Cam, it's just unfortunately what sports "journalism" has become today. Now it's mostly about twisting words and writing a "gotcha" hit piece to get some web traffic and your name out there.

I think the OP made this more of a bigger deal than it really is (though I appreciate his intent and photos).

If Cam can't talk to his former GM, at Training Camp about the current and previous offense, I don't know what he can do then.

Sure PFT, etc., took this and ran with it in negative fashion, per their custom.

However, they look like the bigger idiot, no matter how hard they try to twist, and make headlines off Cam's words.

You can't really take those guys more seriously. What was more innocent than Cam honestly speaking about his first year to his former GM that hired him, the current coach and previous OC??

I apologize if this has already been posted but I do not see anything. Cam talked the NFL Radio today to try and repair any damage from his Marty Hurney interview. The big news was that he didn't want to learn so many plays coming out of Auburn and Chud overwhelmed him. There has been many spins put on it, some of them pretty scathing at the national level.

Here is his response.

“Everyone knows (when I) was coming from Auburn, it was a one hand signal (offense), and I was gone. When I came here it was a culture shock"

“There were things that were thrown at me that I never would have even imagined. The whole college system was somewhat training wheels and whatnot and without the appreciation for me with having coach Chud around, I would not have had the season that I did have.

“I’m very appreciative of that man – him as well as coach (Mike) Shula – believing in me from day one. The way I read the article; it was not portrayed that way. I just wanted to say that if it wasn’t for coach Chud believing in me, first off I wouldn’t have believed in myself.”

Bill Voth's words.

In the interview Cam talks about sometimes when he reads the way his words are portrayed he feels "cheated" some will run with that too I'm sure. This is like Peter King all over again for him.

I have a few problems with this. It starts with the way the media is conducted. Now that everyone has instant access to these interviews, anyone can put a spin on it. This means the person who conducted the interview, the person who looked Cam in the eyes and asked the questions, has no control over the narrative. Dozens or even hundreds of people in the media can now take those quotes and compete with each other for web site hits. I don't need to tell you what kind of headlines generate the most "buzz".

The second problem is Cam himself. Cam does not always spell it out. He says things and expects people to be on the same page as him so he doesn't complete the thought. Here is an example.

Cam's quote: "it was kind of force-feeding a kid with carrots."

What Cam did is make an analogy how a person in a position of authority will force a child to eat carrots. Kids do not enjoy carrots but they are good for children because they are healthy.

But Cam didn't explain his analogy and left it open to interpretation. This is not Cam's first analogy. He's called himself a lion on a safari. He compared his rookie season to collard greens rather than instant grits.

So occasionally Cam says things that can be quoted without context and turn into a story to fill the news cycle. Peter King summed it up pretty well:

I hate this for Cam because he gets ripped for not spending time with local media. He's rarely comes on WFNZ over the years. But he gets in a situation where maybe he feels safe talking to a former co worker on a local station but the quotes go national in minutes and now he has to clean up a mess rather than rest and study for his next practice.

And to be fair to ESPN 730 they tried to give him a chance to clarify his comments but Cam didn't really take it because in the moment he felt his comments were clear.

PS: Disagree with that (the bold).

'Forcing a kid to eat carrots', is obviously a punctuation to what he was saying. That's pretty clear.

Any quote can be taken out of context, so you need to stop fearing about that. You can't interconnect everything anyway.

And yes, this has already been written, spoken about, criticitzed (both hear and on WFNZ, with total support to Cam), and forgotten already. Lol. Blame Bill Voth. Lol. He thinks he's the reason.

You can't blame Cam for having that type of discussion with his former GM. It was the media that blew this story. PS: Various former Panthers have criticized Chud in much more dismissive fashion, but of course that's not blaring headlines to most media.

More importantly, this appeared to be something very cool, and the media wanted to rain on the parade. Quite frankly, I don't think Cam really cares (on clarifying). And I kinda support/believe him on this. Not a big deal.

Yeh, if you took the time to read it carefully it is obvious. I understand it gets you hits, and hits are good even if they are negative. But why would you want twisted info to be synonymous with YOUR name??? Other than the fact it takes a lot less work.

When I read the interview it seemed plain as day that Cam was ripping himself for not having the patience to learn a complex offense when he first came out of college.

Having said that, Cam doesn't always get his point across well in interviews. If I were him, I would stop doing them.

Neither do a lot of athletes.

Cam is certainly not among the worst I've heard. Not at all.

The difference, everything that Cam says, is usually spun in a negative fashion. Other players don't have that problem.

You guys care WAY TO MUCH about what the media says about a team that you cheer for.

Agreed!

If they can spin something as innocent and personal (he was talking to his former GM about his first year at Training camp) as this, then good luck on hoping Cam or the media will shape themselves to a certain Huddle standard.

This was a total low blow by them (media minions).

Gantt is stirring the pot.  He has gone from a journalist with integrity to a PFT/TMZ clown.  I agree with Hatter, who cares?  I don't read the threads on here that are something like "Cam gets a new haircut; doesn't trust cheese in a can."

Cam is doing the right stuff, and Chud's system was probably complex. But those of you who were blasting some of us for questioning Cam's maturity then---what the hell does this tell you about the difference between 2011 Cam and 2014 Cam?

I have gone from a Cam skeptic to a huge Cam supporter.  It would not have happened had he not grown up.
